Despite holding a 5-2-1 record after dropping their Week 9 matchup to the Carolina Panthers, the Green Bay Packers aren’t without areas for improvement.
From the start of the year, it was clear the team required additional depth at cornerback. Nate Hobbs and Keisean Nixon have performed solidly, yet the position could benefit from further reinforcement.
Dianna Russini from The Athletic recently shared insight on this matter, stating that Green Bay is “looking for corners” ahead of the NFL trade deadline set for next Tuesday.
This development follows whispers that the Packers reached out to the Cleveland Browns regarding Denzel Ward, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, sometime earlier this week.
Entering Week 9, Green Bay boasted the league’s sixth-ranked overall defense—a feat bolstered by acquiring Micah Parsons to bolster an already formidable group right before the 2025 season kicked off.
That said, their pass defense sat at a middling 15th in the rankings, highlighting a clear opportunity for enhancement in the back end.
The Packers parted ways with Jaire Alexander over the offseason without securing a direct successor, though Alexander’s injury history in Green Bay made his departure less impactful.
One might have anticipated a proactive step to address this gap, but the team has stayed quiet so far, even as veterans like Stephon Gilmore and Asante Samuel Jr. remain unsigned in free agency.
Having already surrendered two first-round picks for Parsons, it’ll be telling to observe what assets general manager Brian Gutekunst might part with to land a corner via trade.
Gutekunst has typically approached deals with caution, making the Parsons acquisition a notable exception.
Now, with Green Bay positioned as legitimate Super Bowl contenders, he might adopt a bolder strategy leading up to Nov. 4.
Competition for cornerback talent is stiff, and in a seemingly thin pool of options, the Packers could need to act swiftly. They might even succeed in luring Ward from Cleveland. Time will tell.
