Golden State Warriors Make Savvy Move with Chris Paul’s Contract

The Golden State Warriors are one team many people will be keeping a close eye on in the coming days. Their roster could look vastly different, with several veterans who could be on the move. One of those veterans is Chris Paul.

The future Hall of Famer was acquired from the Washington Wizards last offseason in exchange for Jordan Poole. It was a move he was likely thrilled about after the Phoenix Suns shipped him there in the Bradley Beal blockbuster.

Alas, things didn’t pan out as well as either side had hoped. Chris Paul showed he was willing to do whatever the team needed, as he came off the bench for the first time potentially ever in his basketball career.

The results weren’t great, as the Golden State Warriors missed the playoffs, getting eliminated in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Heading into the 2024 NBA offseason, the future of Chris Paul is certainly up in the air.

Trying to figure out what to do with him, the Golden State Warriors made a savvy move. Both sides agreed to move the guarantee date for his contract to Sunday when free agency begins in the NBA.

That provides the team with a small window to continue exploring trade routes centered around Chris Paul. Set to make $30 million, the Golden State Warriors could look to turn that into a player or two to help upgrade other areas of need on the roster.

The original date for his contract to become guaranteed was on Friday. There is still a chance that the Golden State Warriors opt to waive Chris Paul to receive salary relief, but they will have a little longer to seek out other avenues.

If the team was going to swing a deal for someone such as Paul George, Chris Paul’s contract would be needed. Pushing the date back was the right move for the team, and he is a consummate professional agreeing to such knowing he could end up being traded to a team with no chance of contending in the 2024-25 season.
