Former Michigan Wolverines All-American cornerback Will Johnson is facing a potentially season-ending neck injury after the Arizona Cardinals’ 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a development that lands with extra weight for anyone who watched him dominate in maize and blue.
Johnson, a Detroit native who starred at Grosse Pointe South before becoming a two-time All-American at Michigan, arrived in the NFL as a second-round pick in 2025 after a decorated college career that included a national championship and Defensive MVP honors in the title game.
In Ann Arbor, he was the shutdown presence who made big plays look routine, finishing with nine interceptions and three pick-sixes across three seasons.
That same physical, instinctive style has defined his early professional work as a starting corner for the Cardinals. Now it has been interrupted.
Head coach Mike LaFleur delivered the update the day after the Seattle game.
“Will’s got a neck,” LaFleur said. “Potentially could miss the whole season.”
At minimum Johnson, is headed to injured reserve. The coach offered no further medical details and did not confirm whether surgery would be required, but the tone made clear the Cardinals expect to be without their young starter for far more than the four-game IR minimum.
LaFleur’s comments also reflected the personal side of the news.
“You’re sick for Will, for obvious reasons, the person over the player. And then obviously his teammates are sick for him too.”
Those words will resonate with Michigan fans who remember Johnson as more than a highlight reel. He was a homegrown Wolverine who helped deliver a championship and then turned pro while still very young.
A neck injury of this nature is never taken lightly, and the uncertainty surrounding his 2026 season is difficult to hear.
Arizona has depth at the position and will look to Starling Thomas and others to fill the snaps while Johnson recovers.
For the Wolverine community, the focus is simpler: hoping the former All-American can heal fully and return to the field healthy. Johnson’s college tape showed a player built for the long haul.
