Arizona Cardinals starting cornerback Will Johnson is facing a potentially season-ending injury after the team’s lopsided 31-7 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coach Mike LaFleur delivered the update during his livestreamed press conference the following day, leaving little doubt about the seriousness of the situation.

“Will’s got a neck,” LaFleur said. “Potentially could miss the whole season.”

At a minimum, Johnson is expected to land on injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least four games. The coach’s comments, however, pointed toward a much longer absence.

LaFleur offered no further medical details, including whether surgery would be required, but the tone made clear the news was grim for both the player and the organization.

“You’re sick for Will, for obvious reasons, the person over the player. And then obviously his teammates are sick for him too,” LaFleur added.

The loss of a starting cornerback this early in the 2026 season creates an immediate challenge for Arizona’s secondary. Johnson, a second-year player wearing No. 0, had been a regular in the lineup.

His absence will force others to take on larger roles, particularly as the Cardinals prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

LaFleur pointed to the group’s existing depth as a source of optimism.

“What’s great is we have a deep corner room,” he said. “Star’s played a lot of football here, Star’s played good football, and Star’s in a good spot headspace-wise and physically.” Starling Thomas, currently on the practice squad, is the most likely candidate to see increased snaps.

The Cardinals have five other cornerbacks already on the 53-man roster and can either sign Thomas or use one of their three standard practice-squad elevations to get him into the game. After three elevations, any additional appearances would require a roster move.

Two other injury situations at the position add layers of uncertainty. Garrett Williams has been inactive for the first two games while recovering from an Achilles injury, though he has participated on a limited basis in practice.

Max Melton also left the Seahawks game with a toe issue, raising questions about his availability this week. If Melton is limited, Arizona could be forced to rely on its third- and fourth-string options on the outside.

The 49ers present a difficult test regardless of who lines up at corner. San Francisco’s receiving group includes Deebo Samuel, Mike Evans, and Demarcus Robinson, a combination that will demand coverage discipline and physicality.

How the Cardinals manage their depleted secondary in the coming days will shape both their Week 3 plans and the longer-term outlook for a defense already searching for consistency after a disappointing start.
