Jim Mitchell, who spent eight seasons anchoring the Detroit Lions’ defensive line in the 1970s, died on June 20 at the age of 77.
The longtime NFL player left behind a legacy built on quiet consistency, physical toughness, and leadership that influenced younger teammates long after his playing days ended.
During his time in Detroit from 1970 to 1977, Mitchell appeared in 102 games and recorded 18 sacks. He also contributed with one interception, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries, establishing himself as a reliable force on a unit that needed steady performers up front.
A native of Virginia, Mitchell stood out as one of the early trailblazers from historically Black colleges and universities when he reached the professional ranks. He became the third player from Virginia State University to make it to the NFL, opening doors for future athletes from similar programs.
Former Lions defensive lineman Doug English remembered Mitchell fondly for the example he set.
“He was a great mentor,” English said. “Obviously, rookies need good examples in how to prepare mentally and physically and just how to approach the game at that level, and he was a great example. The ones that try to be an example aren’t nearly as good as the ones that just do the work and you pay attention. He was a good, solid player and very quiet and did a great job.”
Born in Danville, Virginia, Mitchell excelled on the field at Virginia State before transitioning to professional football. The Lions selected him in the third round of the 1970 NFL Draft, bringing the talented defensive prospect to Detroit where he quickly earned a spot in the rotation.
Even during his college years, Mitchell displayed a fierce competitive edge when facing opposing passers.
“I don’t like (quarterbacks) much at all,” Mitchell said. “Sometimes in the heat of a game, it gets so I actually hate the quarterback.”
Throughout his eight seasons with the Lions, Mitchell proved to be a versatile and dependable presence along the defensive front. He lined up effectively at both defensive end and defensive tackle, providing stability to a unit that faced varying levels of success during that era.
Mitchell experienced the postseason only once in his career, during his rookie year. He started in the Lions’ 5-0 playoff defeat against the Dallas Cowboys on December 26, 1970, showing the same workmanlike approach that defined his entire professional tenure.
After hanging up his cleats, Mitchell returned to his home state of Virginia and built a new career in the automotive industry. He became a successful car dealer and even lent his name to one of his businesses, Jim Mitchell Hyundai, where advertisements playfully promised customers that “we’ll tackle any deal.”
In addition to his business achievements, Mitchell received an appointment from the governor’s office to serve on the Virginia Motor Vehicle Dealer Board. This role reflected the respect he earned in his community and his commitment to the industry he helped grow after football.
Mitchell’s journey from a standout at a historically Black college to an eight-year NFL contributor and later a respected businessman highlights a life of determination and quiet impact.
His approach to the game and to life after it continues to serve as an inspiration for those who knew him and those who learn about his story.
