Eagles Put on Notice Over A.J. Brown Trade Ahead of Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to maintain a strong negotiating stance regarding veteran wide receiver A.J. Brown, emphasizing their desire for substantial compensation in any potential deal. Team officials have projected confidence by suggesting they feel no urgency to move the standout pass-catcher during the current offseason.

This approach has allowed Philadelphia to preserve maximum leverage in trade discussions. However, local analysts caution that the team must navigate the upcoming NFL Draft with care to avoid undermining their bargaining position.

On Tuesday morning, 94WIP.com’s Eliot Shorr-Parks shared his perspective via social media, highlighting a critical factor tied to draft selections.

“One thing to consider with the NFL Draft and the AJ Brown situation: The Eagles lose basically all trade leverage the second they take a wide receiver in the first round,” Shorr-Parks wrote.

“If they take Boston/Tyson at 23 or move up for Tate, that signals AJ is gone — and impacts the trade return.”

Recent mock drafts have pointed to the possibility of the Eagles selecting a wide receiver early. For instance, ESPN’s Peter Schrager projected the team landing Denzel Boston with the 23rd overall pick in his latest 2026 NFL Mock Draft.

In addition to their existing core, Philadelphia has already bolstered its receiving group through free agency by signing Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and Elijah Moore. The team also returns reliable wideout DeVonta Smith, creating a solid foundation even before considering further moves.

Should the Eagles ultimately decide to part ways with A.J. Brown this spring, investing a first-round selection on a wide receiver would logically strengthen the passing attack. Pairing Smith with another high-upside talent could keep the offense explosive and competitive.

Shorr-Parks also raised the idea of Philadelphia aggressively trading up to secure one of the draft’s premier wideouts, such as Carnell Tate. Yet he views such a maneuver as a clear indicator that Brown’s departure has already been decided internally.

That kind of overt signal could weaken the Eagles’ position in ongoing trade talks. Opposing teams would likely sense urgency and adjust their offers downward, potentially leaving Philadelphia with less valuable assets in return.

Beyond draft strategy, financial considerations are playing a major role in the timing of any Brown transaction. The organization appears inclined to delay any trade until after June 1 to minimize significant salary cap consequences.

If dealt before that date, the Eagles would face a hefty $43.44 million dead cap charge, according to Over the Cap data. Postponing the move until afterward reduces that figure substantially to $16.35 million, providing much-needed flexibility for future roster building.

This combination of draft planning, free-agent additions, and cap management underscores the complex balancing act the Eagles face as they evaluate the future of their receiving corps.
