Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter is set to earn elite compensation under his new deal without forcing the franchise into an immediate salary-cap crunch.
The four-year extension is valued at $152 million and features $40.8 million guaranteed upon signing, according to Spotrac. An additional $30 million is scheduled to become fully guaranteed next March.
The practical total guarantee over the four years approaches $106.8 million.Incentives could lift the overall package as high as $160 million. The agreement locks Carter in through the 2031 season. His average annual value of $38 million establishes him as the highest-paid defensive tackle in league history.
The Eagles built the contract around five option bonuses and four void years. Those option bonuses let the team distribute cap charges across several seasons instead of taking the full hit at once. The void years serve purely as accounting tools and do not extend Carter’s actual playing contract past 2031.
For the 2026 season, Carter’s cap number climbs to $9.1 million. That figure costs the Eagles roughly $2.1 million more in cap space than the previous arrangement. The real relief arrives in 2027. His projected $9.5 million charge that year creates about $17.6 million in savings relative to the fifth-year option the team had already exercised.
Cap figures rise steadily afterward. They stand at $15.5 million in 2028, $22.2 million in 2029, $29.4 million in 2030 and $26.2 million in 2031. A projected $68.1 million charge appears in 2032, the first void year.
Team officials are unlikely to leave that number in place. They could negotiate another extension, restructure remaining portions of the current deal or handle the leftover money through other cap maneuvers.
The structure mirrors general manager Howie Roseman’s long-standing approach. He prefers to lock up key contributors ahead of schedule while shifting heavier accounting costs into later years when the NFL salary cap is projected to grow.
Carter walks away with record-setting pay and strong contractual protection. The Eagles keep meaningful short-term flexibility, especially in 2027. The deferred money has not vanished, however. Philadelphia is counting on Carter’s continued high-level play to support whatever financial moves become necessary before the void-year charges come due.
The deal removes any lingering uncertainty about the young defensive tackle’s future in Philadelphia. It also gives the front office breathing room to address other roster needs over the next two seasons. By spreading the financial impact, the Eagles can maintain competitive balance while retaining one of the league’s premier interior defenders.
Roseman has used similar creative structures with other core players. The Carter contract continues that pattern of early commitment paired with careful long-term planning. Fans and analysts will watch how the team manages the later years of the deal, particularly the large void-year number.
For now, both sides appear satisfied. Carter gains security and top-of-market earnings. The Eagles secure a foundational piece of their defense at a manageable near-term cost.
