Patrick Mahomes has received medical clearance to guide the Kansas City Chiefs through the 2026 season, yet the three-time Super Bowl champion has made clear that one critical element of his recovery remains unfinished.

Speaking from training camp in St. Joseph, Mo., the quarterback explained that the last obstacle is not physical. It is the mental side of the game, the full restoration of confidence that arrives only after absorbing contact and continuing to create plays following a serious knee injury.

“You’ll never know until you get out there, and you get hit and make plays,” Mahomes told reporters. “That’s just kind of part of it. But I trust the process that I’ve been through. I feel amazing, and I just have to keep continuing with that.”

Mahomes drew a direct parallel to his recovery from a dislocated kneecap in 2019. Twenty-five days after returning from that injury, he produced one of the signature moments of his career against the Tennessee Titans. Under pressure, he scrambled free, launched himself into the air, and delivered a 63-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.

Looking back on the highlight, he offered a practical explanation for the athletic flourish. “It looks cool, but I actually did it because I was trying to get my knee out of there,” Mahomes said. “Little things like that, you just have to build that confidence back.”

Seven years later, that same insight shapes his outlook on the current rehabilitation. Although doctors have cleared him for full participation in camp, Mahomes insists the final mental clearance will come only in live action. He anticipates that the first significant hit will serve as the turning point.

“Then I’ll take that first hit, just like you do every regular season, and then you get back to play football, a game you love,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes suffered a severe knee injury in Week 15 last season, tearing both his ACL and LCL. There had been serious doubt as to whether or not he would be ready for the 2026 season opener, but now, the three-time Super Bowl champion appears to be on track to play in Week 1.

Videos circulating from camp have only heightened the sense of anticipation among Chiefs supporters.

Clips of Mahomes weaving through traffic, planting, and exploding into space have drawn enthusiastic reactions, with one observer declaring the league is not prepared for what is coming and another suggesting the quarterback could handle game action immediately.

The team itself posted footage of the quarterback moving freely during practice, allowing the images to speak for themselves.

For Mahomes, the physical foundation appears solid. What remains is the familiar, necessary step of proving to himself once more that the knee can withstand the chaos of an NFL game and that the instinctive, improvisational brilliance that defines his play can return without hesitation.
