Dwight Howard is officially headed to Springfield.

The eight-time NBA All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year has been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Howard was chosen in his first year of eligibility and will join fellow NBA great Carmelo Anthony in this year’s class. The induction ceremony is set for Sept. 6.

Howard was selected No. 1 overall in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, launching an 18-year professional career that included stops with the Lakers, Rockets, Hawks, Hornets, 76ers, and Wizards. It was in Orlando where Howard made his biggest mark, transforming into the league’s premier interior defender and rebounder while leading the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals.

From 2008 to 2011, Howard became the first player in NBA history to win three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards. He led the league in rebounding five times and blocks twice, routinely dominating the paint on both ends of the floor. His blend of strength, athleticism, and timing made him one of his era’s most feared big men.

Howard’s career averages include 15.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game on 58.7 percent shooting. He ranks 10th on the NBA’s all-time rebounding list and 13th in career blocks with 2,228. He played his final NBA season with the Lakers in 2021–22.

Beyond his individual accolades, Howard won an NBA championship with Los Angeles in 2020 and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2008. On Feb. 14, he was officially named one of 17 Hall of Fame finalists.

In September, Howard will now receive basketball’s highest honor, capping off a legacy of elite defense, durability, and postseason success.
