Deion Sanders Sees Colorado Suffer Significant Setback

The Colorado Buffaloes, under head coach Deion Sanders, struggled to maintain momentum after a promising 9-4 campaign in 2024. This year, the team ended with a disappointing 3-9 overall record, marked by extended periods of defeat that highlighted ongoing challenges in Boulder.

Sanders has long emphasized rebuilding the team primarily via the transfer portal, a strategy that brought initial success but now appears to be working against the program. Rival schools have started targeting Colorado’s talent pool, capitalizing on the team’s difficulties during a tough season.

Even with Sanders expressing optimism about upcoming adjustments and his determination to reverse the fortunes of the squad, the Buffaloes suffered significant blows midweek. Two standout performers decided to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Reports from On3 share that standout wideout Omarion Miller and defensive back Tawfiq Byard plan to submit their names to the transfer portal soon.

Miller, a highly regarded former four-star prospect, dominated Colorado’s receiving stats this season. He recorded 45 catches for 808 yards and eight touchdowns, establishing himself as the go-to target in the passing game.

Many anticipated Miller would thrive further following the arrival of offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, known for developing elite receivers such as Jordan Addison at Pitt and Xavier Worthy at Texas during their peak performances.

Byard transferred to Colorado from USF prior to this season. He quickly became a defensive leader, topping the team with 79 tackles, adding four pass breakups, and securing one interception.

Although Sanders’ position remains secure without immediate pressure, the departures underscore how competing programs are exploiting the Buffaloes’ recent hardships to lure away top contributors.

The official window for the college football transfer portal begins on Jan. 2, yet close to 800 athletes have already signaled their plans to explore new teams.

As Colorado prepares for another active offseason in the portal—both losing and potentially gaining players—these exits serve as a reminder of the volatile nature of modern college rosters, especially for programs navigating rebuilding phases.
