The Dallas Cowboys have done very little this offseason, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise given their miserable financial situation. But could they strike big with a trade for a certain Pittsburgh Steelers superstar in the coming weeks?
Apparently, Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt is not too thrilled with the fact that he has not yet landed a new contract from Pittsburgh, and he has made his thoughts known (well, kind of) on social media.
Naturally, this has fired up a whole lot of trade speculation, and even though Watt almost certainly won’t been dealt, it won’t stop fans and pundits from creating hypothetical trades.
That is exactly what Bleacher Report’s NFL Daily did recently, proposing that the Cowboys could swing a blockbuster deal for Watt in which they would trade their first-round draft pick while also maybe even throwing Dak Prescott into the mix.
Prescott’s name has been tossed around in trade conjecture recently due to the massive contract he signed with Dallas last year. The 31-year-old certainly did not live up to his contract in 2024, throwing 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games before going down to a season-ending hamstring injury.
Of course, the question is, why would the Steelers want to acquire Prescott, who is making $60 million on average through 2028? Yes, Pittsburgh needs a quarterback, but it would almost surely be better off selecting one in the NFL Draft rather than taking on Prescott and his gargantuan contract.
Would the Cowboys be willing to eat some of Prescott’s money? Perhaps, but probably not nearly enough to make a potential trade all that enticing for the Steelers.
That’s not to mention the fact that Watt just notched his seventh straight Pro Bowl appearance after finishing with 61 tackles, 11.5 sacks and six forced fumbles. He has led the league in sacks three times, tying Michael Strahan’s single-season record with 22.5 sacks back in 2021.
Watt has just one year remaining on his deal, but more than likely, Pittsburgh will reach an agreement with him at some point. And even if not, the idea of the Steelers seriously taking on Prescott in a deal with the Cowboys is beyond farfetched.
On top of all of that, isn’t Dallas struggling with the idea of paying Micah Parsons? Why would the Cowboys then acquire Watt, who is slated to hit free agency next March?
To make a long story short, this isn’t happening, but it’s always fun to get into hypotheticals.
