The Washington Commanders are determined to return to the postseason this year, with third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm of their offense. At just 25 years old, Daniels enters the campaign with high expectations, but he will need to adjust to a significantly revamped group of pass catchers around him.
Several experienced wide receivers departed during the offseason, creating uncertainty in the unit. Among the notable absences is Deebo Samuel, who remains an unsigned free agent. Last season, Samuel stood out as the team’s top target, recording 99 targets, 72 catches, 727 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
With organized team activities now complete, the focus shifts to the upcoming mandatory minicamp, which begins on Tuesday. Head coach Dan Quinn and his assistants will use this time to thoroughly evaluate the current roster and identify areas that may need reinforcement as training camp approaches.
According to ESPN reporter John Keim, the team appears generally satisfied with their receiving options despite some lingering concerns. However, that satisfaction does not rule out potential additions from outside the organization.
“The Commanders do seem to like their receiver room — even if there are question marks — though that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t potentially add a player such as Brandon Aiyuk or Stefon Diggs,” Keim wrote.
One name that continues to generate interest is veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. The 32-year-old played a pivotal role for the New England Patriots last season, contributing heavily to their Super Bowl run. Diggs started all 17 regular-season contests, finishing with 85 receptions to lead the team, along with 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.
Diggs has built a reputation for reliability throughout his professional career, which began in 2015. He has suited up for at least 14 games in eight of the past nine seasons and has surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone seven times in his career.
His resilience shone through after suffering a torn ACL while with the Houston Texans in 2024. Diggs recovered strongly and emerged as the primary receiving option for young quarterback Drake Maye in New England, providing a steady target who could prove especially valuable to a developing signal-caller like Daniels.
Beyond his on-field production, Diggs represents a financially practical choice for Washington. Projections from Spotrac indicate a potential two-year, $27.6 million deal aligns with his current market value. Given the Commanders’ $43.9 million in available salary cap space, the organization possesses the flexibility to pursue such a signing without major constraints.
As a native of the Maryland area and former Terrapin, Diggs could bring not only proven talent but also a level of familiarity and leadership to the Commanders’ offense.
His presence might accelerate the growth of Daniels while helping bridge the gap left by recent departures, positioning the franchise for a stronger push toward playoff contention.
