Chiefs Could Lose Travis Kelce to AFC Opponent in Bombshell Scenario

The Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce remains undecided about his next steps in professional football. As one of the league’s most accomplished players and a likely future inductee into the Hall of Fame, he has openly weighed the possibility of stepping away from the game while also hinting at a potential return to the team that has defined his career.

Until an official announcement or contract signing occurs, speculation continues to swirl around his status. As an unrestricted free agent, Kelce could attract interest from various franchises eager to add his experience and skill set to their rosters.

One analyst has pointed to a particularly intriguing scenario should Kelce choose not to re-sign with Kansas City.

In a recent piece ranking top free agents and their projected destinations, Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated highlighted the Cleveland Browns as a strong potential match.

Verderame observed: “If Kelce doesn’t retire, the smart money says he and the Chiefs will work out a one-year deal, but if he’s available, he should have ample suitors.”

The Browns boast an emerging talent at tight end in Harold Fannin Jr., who has shown promise in recent seasons. Bringing in a veteran like Kelce could provide invaluable mentorship, allowing the young player to develop under the guidance of someone widely regarded as one of the position’s all-time greats.

Additionally, Cleveland faces uncertainty at the position with David Njoku potentially departing via free agency. This creates a clear opening where Kelce’s presence could stabilize the group and offer immediate production.

While the idea of Kelce joining the Browns might initially seem unlikely given his long tenure in Kansas City, personal ties make it more plausible than it appears at first glance. Kelce, a native of the Cleveland area who attended the University of Cincinnati, has long expressed affection for his hometown team.

During his time in the pre-draft process more than a decade ago, he made an impassioned case to play for Cleveland.

In a 2025 interview with GQ, the three-time Super Bowl winner shared a vivid memory from a meeting with then-head coach Rob Chudzinski: “I cried in (then Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski) Chud’s office and said, ‘I will [expletive]die for this city!’” Kelce recalled. “Was in tears… said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m getting emotional. I grew up down the street. I would [expletive] do anything to play for the Cleveland Browns.’”

That emotional display underscores a deep-rooted connection to the region, one that has persisted despite years of success elsewhere. Selected by the Chiefs in the third round (63rd overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, Kelce went on to establish himself as a dominant force, rewriting record books for tight ends along the way.

Having captured multiple championships and earned acclaim as potentially the finest receiving tight end in NFL history, Kelce has little left to achieve in terms of accolades or legacy. This stage of his career opens the door to prioritizing sentiment and personal fulfillment over additional titles.

A move back to Ohio for what could be the closing chapter of his playing days would represent a poetic conclusion to an extraordinary journey. Returning to the franchise he once begged to join, even briefly, would allow Kelce to give back to the community that shaped him while providing Cleveland fans with a memorable homecoming story.

Of course, the most probable outcome still points toward a short-term agreement to stay with the Chiefs, where he has thrived alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Yet the possibility of an Ohio reunion adds an extra layer of intrigue to what has become one of the offseason’s most compelling narratives.

As discussions continue and the free agency period approaches, all eyes remain on Kelce’s final choice—one that could either extend a dynasty in Kansas City or spark an emotional return to his roots in Cleveland.
