This past weekend, the WNBA had a marquee matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever. Two of the league’s most promising rookies, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, were adding another chapter to their rivalry, the first as professionals.
It was Clark and the Fever who came away victorious, winning 71-70. It was their second win of the season and first at home. But, the outcome of the game isn’t what anyone was focused on afterward.
Instead, all focus was on the foul committed by Chennedy Carter against Caitlin Clark. In the third quarter, as the Fever were inbounding the ball, Carter came from Clark’s blindside and threw a shoulder block into her.
The play was not reviewed during the game. Carter was assessed an away-from-the-ball violation and it was deemed a common foul. Alas, the league reviewed the play and retroactively assessed a Flagrant-1 foul on Sunday.
On Monday, Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon spoke about the hard foul. She said it is something that her team will learn from, as that isn’t the kind of basketball they are looking to play.
“Physical play, intensity, and a competitive spirit are hallmarks of Chicago Sky basketball,” Weatherspoon said in a statement released Monday. “Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment in an effort to win the game.
“She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this, as we all will.”
This isn’t the first time that a veteran player has gotten physical with Caitlin Clark and it certainly won’t be the last. However, Carter crossed the line, delivering a blatant hard hit from Clark’s blindside.
Weatherspoon, who starred in the WNBA at its inception with the New York Liberty, is in her first season as head coach of the Chicago Sky. They are currently 3-4, but got Kamilla Cardoso, the No. 3 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, in the lineup for the first time this season against the Fever.
