Caitlin Clark Leaving WNBA for Europe? It’s Becoming a Possibility

Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason has sparked fresh debate by suggesting that rising basketball sensation Caitlin Clark ought to think seriously about departing the WNBA while she is still just 24 years old. His remarks come in the wake of a troubling on-court incident that highlighted ongoing questions about player safety and fair treatment in the league.

During Wednesday night’s matchup between the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury, Clark was forced to exit the game prematurely because of a back injury. The standout guard had already managed a similar back problem earlier in the season, prompting speculation that team medical personnel chose a cautious approach to avoid any long-term setback.

The real flashpoint of the evening, however, involved an aggressive play from Phoenix star Alyssa Thomas. In the second quarter, during a physical scuffle, Thomas appeared to drive her fist directly into Clark’s throat, an action many observers labeled as unnecessary and excessive.

Fever head coach Stephanie White did not hold back when addressing the officials’ handling of the situation.

“Absolutely disrespectful. We spent all offseason looking at officiating, and I still say the one thing that we keep asking for is consistency,” White said. “[Clark] is not called the same way as everybody else is called. The fist in the throat is crazy. It’s crazy. It’s dangerous. … When you have these things continue to happen time and time and time again, eventually it gets frustrating.”

The episode has reignited broader conversations about how the league protects its most visible talents. Clark’s rapid rise has brought unprecedented attention to women’s basketball, yet it has also exposed her to heightened physical scrutiny on the court.

On Thursday morning, while appearing on WFAN radio, Esiason offered a bold recommendation for the young star. He encouraged Clark to explore opportunities abroad, where he believes she would receive better compensation and far more respectful treatment from peers and fans alike.

“If I were Caitlin Clark, I would seriously consider going to play overseas somewhere and get the royal treatment and get real money,” Esiason said. “She can’t go to the Russians – we saw that Brittney Griner got stuck there. But a lot of women play overseas to supplement their income. I know Caitlin makes a lot of money from endorsements, but I think there’s a lot of jealousy [in the WNBA]. She’s a straight white basketball player, and she is not being treated with any sort of respect.”

Esiason’s perspective taps into wider discussions about the dynamics within the WNBA. Many players supplement their domestic earnings by competing in international leagues during the offseason, drawn by higher salaries and different competitive environments.

Clark’s combination of skill, marketability, and background has made her a lightning rod for both admiration and criticism. Supporters argue that her success has elevated the entire league, while some suggest underlying tensions have manifested in rougher on-court behavior directed her way.

Despite the intensity of Wednesday’s events, few expect Clark to walk away from the WNBA anytime soon. Her commitment to growing the game domestically appears strong, and her endorsement portfolio already provides substantial financial rewards beyond her rookie contract.

Still, the league faces mounting pressure to address these recurring issues. Ensuring consistent officiating and genuine player safety will be essential if the WNBA hopes to retain and nurture its biggest drawing card moving forward.

Protecting Clark is not just about one athlete—it reflects the future health and appeal of the entire professional women’s basketball landscape.
