Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark remains one technical foul away from an automatic suspension after the WNBA rejected the team’s request to overturn her most recent technical.

The star received her seventh technical of the season during Indiana’s victory over the Connecticut Sun before the All-Star break. The call came in the third quarter following a heated exchange with Sun guard Saniya Rivers that resulted in double technical fouls.

Clark finished the contest with 27 points and 11 assists. Speaking afterward, she said Rivers initiated the confrontation by claiming she was locking her up. Clark responded by pointing out the scoreboard, noting Indiana led 95-67 at the time.

Trash talk is common throughout the league, and many observers argued the exchange did not warrant a technical foul. The Fever nonetheless submitted an appeal to the WNBA in an effort to have the call rescinded and keep Clark clear of the suspension threshold.

The league declined.

“The WNBA will not rescind the technical foul assessed to Caitlin Clark during last Wednesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun, a league source confirmed to IndyStar,” Brian Haenchen of the Indianapolis Star shared.

Clark’s total therefore remains at seven. Under WNBA rules, an eighth technical foul triggers an automatic one-game suspension along with a $1,500 fine.

Additional technical fouls beyond the eighth also carry consequences. Every other technical after the eighth — including a player’s 10th, 12th, 14th and subsequent even-numbered total — results in another one-game suspension.

The ruling leaves Clark walking a fine line for the remainder of the regular season. Any further technical puts her on the sideline for at least one contest and costs her money, while repeated infractions could lead to multiple absences.

Indiana has leaned heavily on Clark’s scoring and playmaking throughout the year. Missing even a single game would force the Fever to adjust their rotation and offensive sets without their primary offensive engine.

League officials have shown little willingness to reverse technical fouls once assessed, particularly when they stem from on-court verbal exchanges. The decision reinforces that standard for Clark and the rest of the WNBA.

Clark has drawn attention for her competitive fire as well as her production. The latest technical and the unsuccessful appeal add another layer to the scrutiny surrounding her every interaction with opponents and officials.

The Fever will now monitor her carefully in upcoming games. With the All-Star break concluded, every remaining contest carries heightened stakes for a player sitting one technical foul from mandatory rest.

Clark’s ability to channel intensity without crossing the line will likely determine whether she avoids further discipline.

For now, the seventh technical stands, the appeal is closed, and the suspension clock ticks one foul closer.
