The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver room has long been a topic of quiet concern among those who follow the franchise closely, and that could present big problems for Patrick Mahomes heading into 2026.
With Tyquan Thornton appearing headed for a larger role than many believe he can sustain and the depth chart thinning dramatically after the top three options, the Chiefs clearly need an injection of proven production.
Justin Carter of FanSided feels that Tennessee Titans receiver Calvin Ridley represents exactly that kind of addition—a veteran who could step in immediately and elevate the group without requiring a long-term commitment that would further strain the franchise’s already tight salary structure.
Carter notes that the Titans, after drafting Carnell Tate early and adding Wan’Dale Robinson while seeing solid development from young players such as Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike, no longer view Ridley as essential to their plans. That creates an opening for a contender like Kansas City, which is in the market for a one-year rental rather than a multi-year investment.
Ridley’s contract carries a substantial 2027 cap hit, but the immediate financial impact of acquiring him remains manageable if structured carefully—something the Chiefs must do given their limited available space.
The solution Carter outlines involves more than simply shipping a draft pick to Nashville. Because Kansas City cannot absorb Ridley’s salary without help, the proposal pairs the receiver with cornerback Kristian Fulton heading the other direction.
Fulton’s 2025 season fell short of expectations, and the Chiefs have already invested heavily in the secondary by selecting Mansoor Delane in the first round and Jadon Canady in the fourth while adding Kader Kohou in free agency. Those moves effectively make Fulton expendable. Tennessee, meanwhile, has the cap flexibility to take on his contract.
In exchange, Kansas City would send a fifth-round selection along with Fulton, a price Carter acknowledges may look slightly steep for a player in Ridley’s current situation yet becomes more reasonable when viewed as both a roster upgrade and a modest cap-clearing maneuver that frees an additional $2.3 million for the Chiefs.
Such a trade would address multiple needs at once. Ridley brings route-running polish and the ability to win contested catches, qualities that could complement the existing weapons around Patrick Mahomes and reduce the burden on younger or less proven options.
At the same time, moving Fulton opens opportunity for the newly drafted corners to develop without the pressure of competing against a veteran still on the books. Carter frames the deal as realistic precisely because it balances Tennessee’s desire for future assets and salary relief against Kansas City’s urgency to strengthen a position that has lacked consistency in recent seasons.
Whether the Titans would ultimately accept that package remains an open question, yet the logic is sound. Contenders operating near the salary ceiling often must get creative, and pairing a veteran receiver who fits the scheme with a secondary piece no longer central to the plan offers a pathway that keeps the championship window intact.
In Carter’s view, the Chiefs stand as one of the more natural destinations for Ridley this offseason, provided both sides can agree on the precise compensation that makes the fresh start possible for everyone involved.
