Despite the constant noise from critics ahead of their divisional round matchup, the Buffalo Bills defense delivered when it mattered most, helping secure a 27-25 victory over the Baltimore Ravens and sending the team to the AFC Championship Game.
With a chance to avenge past postseason defeats, the Bills will now face the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of their previous playoff encounters. It will be the Bills’ second appearance in the AFC Championship in three years.
“Our guys heard all the talk — too small, not strong enough, not talented enough,” said Bills coach Sean McDermott. “But we used that as fuel. I think we showed what we’re capable of, especially in the first half. We still have areas to improve, but this is a big step for us.”
While Ravens running back Derrick Henry was able to gain momentum in the second half, finishing with 84 rushing yards, the Bills’ defense, aided by the return of key players, held firm. Linebackers Terrel Bernard, Matt Milano, and nickel cornerback Taron Johnson were vital in keeping the Ravens from taking full control of the game.
Baltimore rushed for 176 yards, including nine runs over 10 yards, but the Bills’ defense capitalized on the Raven’s mistakes, including a dropped 2-point conversion attempt by tight end Mark Andrews, who also fumbled earlier in the game.
“Our guys came out with a chip on their shoulder,” defensive end AJ Epenesa said. “We were determined to prove the doubters wrong. We played with fire and energy from the start.”
Turnovers were key in this matchup. Despite the Baltimore Ravens gaining more yards, they were plagued by mistakes. The Bills created three turnovers — including an interception by Taylor Rapp and a sack from Damar Hamlin — which set up scoring opportunities for the offense.
Quarterback Josh Allen played a steady game, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns, ensuring the Bills took advantage of every opportunity. Notably, Buffalo did not turn the ball over, which has been a key factor in their recent playoff success.
“Everyone said we weren’t good enough, but we showed up,” Allen said. “We’ve got each other’s backs, and we’ll continue to fight together.”
Baltimore, trailing by 11 at halftime, mounted a second-half rally, scoring 15 points. But the Bills’ defense, ranked third in the NFL for takeaways this season, stood tall when it mattered. Despite the late surge, Buffalo’s defense ended the game with a final stop, ensuring the victory.
“We’ve been knocked out by them a few times in the playoffs, but this time we held firm,” linebacker Von Miller said. “We’ve got our eyes set on Kansas City now. We know we’ve got to keep playing at this level to get to the Super Bowl.”
The Bills now face the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in what promises to be a dramatic showdown. Kansas City has knocked Buffalo out of the postseason in each of the past three years, ncluding a heartbreaking loss in the 2020 AFC Championship Game.
“We’ve been here before, and we’re excited for another shot at them,” safety Damar Hamlin said. “It’s going to be a tough environment, but we’re ready. We know what’s at stake.”
The Buffalo Bills defense silenced their critics in this one, but the true test will come next week in Kansas City against the Chiefs. Buffalo will look to upset their postseason nemesis and earn a trip to the Super Bowl.
