The Boston Celtics’ roster is pretty stacked as it is, but there is always room for improvement. The Celtics are always typically pretty active in trade talks, and they probably won’t shy away from trade discussions just because they won the NBA championship last season.
Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey has already identified a potential target for Boston this year: Miami Heat big man Kevin Love.
While Bailey notes that the C’s don’t really have any specific needs, he thinks that Love would be a great fit toward the end of the bench.
“If the Miami Heat get off to a slow start and move Jimmy Butler (who didn’t sign an extension this summer), they may start unloading other veterans, as well,” Bailey wrote. “Kevin Love is a floor-spacer with championship experience who’d fit Boston’s culture and three-point-heavy offense.”
Keep in mind: the Celtics will be without Kristaps Porzingis for the first couple of months as he recovers from foot surgery, so they may be a little thin up front early on. That could open the door for a big man trade, and Love could represent a viable possibility.
Of course, Love is a major defensive liability, but he provides a whole lot in the way of offense and rebounding that could certainly help Boston in spot minutes.
In 55 games with the Heat last season, Love averaged 8.8 points and 6.1 rebounds over 16.8 minutes per game on 44.0/34.4/78.7 shooting splits.
Love is not the long-distance sniper he once was, as he has shot under 35 percent from three-point range in each of the last two campaigns. However, defenses still have to respect his ability to space the floor, and a Celtics’ offense that is largely predicated on ball movement leading to open threes, Love could flourish.
We’ll see if the Boston Celtics try and make a move for Love at some point.
