In a high-stakes showdown at Highmark Stadium on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills narrowly defeated their AFC rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, by a score of 28-21, making a huge statement with the win.
However, the triumph was dulled by a significant setback on the defensive side of the football.
Midway through the game, defensive end Michael Hoecht was forced to exit after sustaining a severe non-contact injury to his lower body. Following an evaluation by the team’s medical staff, the Bills posted an update on X revealing that Hoecht had ruptured his Achilles tendon—a blow many suspected could sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.
Prominent injury analyst Dr. David J. Chao, a familiar voice on SiriusXM Radio and Fox Sports Radio, quickly shared his breakdown on social media based on replay footage.
“By video, classic Achilles tendon rupture,” he said, adding that he would need surgery and that his season was over.
“Kudos to his toughness to continue play,” he said. “Happened with initial right step. He even waived off cart and stayed on sidelines.”
Postgame, Buffalo’s head coach Sean McDermott verified the diagnosis to the media.
“Bills HC Sean McDermott announced that DE Michael Hoecht did in fact tear his Achilles during today’s game vs. the Chiefs,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported.
Hoecht, who sat out the Bills’ opening six contests while fulfilling a league suspension for breaching the performance-enhancing substances rule, made his debut with the squad just a week prior in a victory against the Carolina Panthers. In the Chiefs game, he recorded two tackles and shared a sack on star quarterback Patrick Mahomes prior to the injury.
Across his pair of appearances for Buffalo, Hoecht has compiled five tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble.
This season-ending setback deals a major blow to the Bills’ defensive unit, which is already navigating multiple absences. Key contributors sidelined include starting defensive tackle Ed Oliver, out indefinitely with a biceps tear; fellow interior linemen DaQuan Jones and T.J. Sanders, the latter on injured reserve; and safety Damar Hamlin, also placed on IR.
