Astros’ Trade Deadline Outlook Just Got More Interesting

The Houston Astros have come out of their three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians with a record of 37-42.

Despite sitting fuve games under the break-even mark, the team remains firmly in the mix for the American League West title. Currently occupying fourth place in the division, Houston trails the leading Seattle Mariners by just three games.

The AL West race stands out as particularly competitive and open for most clubs. With only the Mariners holding a winning record, the division appears up for grabs for any squad other than the Los Angeles Angels. This landscape gives the Astros a realistic path to contention if they can find the right improvements in the coming weeks.

As the August 3 trade deadline approaches, Houston is signaling a bold approach rather than a rebuilding mindset. Reports indicate the organization has no interest in moving shortstop Jeremy Peña in exchange for Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. Instead, team officials are focusing on targeted additions to strengthen both the pitching staff and the batting order.

“The Houston Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Peña and first baseman Christian Walker,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale wrote.

“They may be a sub-.500 team, but plan to be buyers at the deadline, not sellers, in a division in which only the Seattle Mariners are above .500. They are searching for bullpen help and a left-handed hitting outfielder.”

This commitment to acquiring talent reflects the Astros’ belief that their current group can still push for a postseason berth. Even with their underwhelming win-loss tally, front office decision-makers appear convinced that strategic moves could elevate the club back into serious contention. The willingness to act aggressively stands in contrast to what many observers might expect from a team hovering below .500.

On Saturday night, the Astros completed a minor deal with the Chicago Cubs, sending right-handed reliever Jayden Murray in exchange for Double-A first baseman Cameron Sisneros. The transaction represents an effort to reshape the roster while addressing depth needs. Murray had struggled during his time in Houston this season, posting a 7.43 ERA across 13.1 innings of work.

His most recent outing highlighted ongoing challenges in the bullpen, as Murray surrendered three hits and two earned runs over two innings in a 9-3 defeat to the Detroit Tigers. Such performances have contributed to broader concerns about the reliability of Houston’s relief corps. According to available metrics, the Astros’ bullpen currently ranks 23rd in Major League Baseball with a 4.60 earned run average.

Improving relief pitching stands out as a clear priority if the team hopes to challenge for the division crown. A more stable bullpen, combined with additional offensive support from a left-handed bat in the outfield, could provide the necessary boost. The Astros’ recent actions suggest they intend to pursue these upgrades actively instead of waiting to see how the season plays out.

By choosing to buy at the deadline despite their record, Houston is betting on its core talent and the winnable nature of the AL West.

The upcoming weeks will test whether this confident strategy pays off, as the team looks to close the gap on Seattle and secure a spot in October baseball. Fans will be watching closely to see which new pieces arrive to support the push.
