Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 2, knocking him out for the foreseeable future. That has made life very difficult for Tyreek Hill and should be causing everyone to re-evaluate their “system quarterback” claims on Tagovailoa.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon revealed a bold take on Tagovailoa and Hill this week, saying that the star wide receiver clearly needs his signal-caller.
“Tua Tagovailoa took plenty of heat for his performances in big moments, but, boy, are we seeing his impact now,” Gagnon wrote. “His absence has made Tyreek Hill borderline irrelevant, and the Dolphins are one of the worst teams in the NFL.”
Let’s put it this way: Hill caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in the season opener. Tagovailoa then went down in Week 2. Hill logged just three catches for 24 yards in that game, and since then, he has totaled seven grabs for 63 yards.
Hill is an incredible talent, but yeah: it has become increasingly obvious that you cannot just slot anyone under center in Miami and expect them to produce.
Tagovailoa has unquestionably benefited from the presence of Hill and Jaylen Waddle in his receiving corps. No one is doubting that. However, the idea that he would be nothing without those two receivers is being proven to be utter nonsense.
The 26-year-old led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards last season for a reason. He may not be Patrick Mahomes, and he definitely has his drawbacks, but he is a good quarterback.
We’ll see if Tyreek Hill and the Miami Dolphins are able to manage without Tua Tagovailoa, who is on injured reserve and is not even eligible to return until Week 8.
