Following the abrupt dismissal of Sherrone Moore as Michigan’s head coach on Wednesday, speculation quickly arose connecting Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer to the vacant position at his former conference rival.
However, DeBoer swiftly dispelled any notions of interest in the Wolverines’ job on Sunday.
“My family and I are very happy in Tuscaloosa and remain extremely grateful for the support of President Mohler, Greg Byrne, the board and so many others,” DeBoer wrote.
“We have an incredible opportunity in front of us, so my sole focus is on Alabama football and our preparations to play Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.”
He added emphatically: “I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job. I am fully committed to this program and look forward to continuing as the head football coach at the University of Alabama.”
The 51-year-old coach is currently preparing his No. 9-ranked Crimson Tide squad for a first-round College Football Playoff matchup against No. 8 Oklahoma on Friday night. Alabama enters the contest with a 10-3 record in DeBoer’s second year leading the program.
According to reporting from On3’s Pete Nakos and Chris Low, Alabama and DeBoer are engaged in discussions regarding a potential contract extension. No agreement has been finalized or signed at this time.
The stakes surrounding the upcoming playoff game have fueled additional commentary.
Last week, ex-Alabama running back Damien Harris indicated that the outcome could carry significant implications for DeBoer’s future.
“In my opinion, I think his job is on the line with this game, and I think there’s a lot of reasons why,” Harris said. “One, we’ve seen how hard it is to beat a team twice in college football.”
DeBoer holds a 19-7 overall record during his tenure at Alabama, including a 12-4 mark in Southeastern Conference games. The team’s most recent appearance ended in a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC title game.
