NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledges the growing concern over the dominance of the three-point shot in the league, suggesting that changes could be on the horizon to address the issue.

As the 2024-25 season progresses, over 41% of all NBA shots come from behind the arc, which has increased frustration among fans and players alike. The Boston Celtics, who recently captured an NBA championship, are on pace to become the first team in league history to attempt more 3-pointers than 2-pointers throughout an entire season. While the long-range revolution was initially celebrated, many have grown weary of the overwhelming reliance on the 3-point shot.

LeBron James, who has been vocal about his concerns with the current state of the game, was quoted in December saying, “there’s a lot of f—ing 3s being shot” in reference to the rising volume of long-range attempts. Silver, who has previously acknowledged the issue, took a more direct approach in a Wednesday appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, saying that the league is considering substantial changes to the current offensive trends.

“As stewards of the game, Joe Dumars leads our competition committee here, we will tweak it, we will correct those issues,” Silver said, signaling that the league is taking steps to address the fan concerns. “What do we do to change it? I agree to the extent that you start to see very similar offenses around the league,” Silver continued, referring to the growing uniformity in playing styles that has emerged in recent years.

The commissioner also recognized the transformation the NBA is experiencing, highlighting the evolution of big men like Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokić, whose skill sets have shifted the role of traditional centers in the league. However, Silver cautioned against rushing into any drastic changes.

“It’s not as simple as just moving the 3-point line back,” Silver explained. “If you do that, you could end up clogging up the area under the basket, and that’s not such attractive basketball either.”

Silver’s comments indicate that the league is seriously considering changes but is cautious. The NBA is evaluating how the current rules impact the game and how potential changes might alter the balance of play. While no specific changes have been finalized, Silver emphasized that the league is working to find a solution that addresses the fan concerns and the broader transformation in the game.

The NBA’s efforts to maintain the integrity of the game while responding to concerns about offensive style reflect a growing awareness within the league. Silver’s comments mark a step forward in a conversation that continues to shape the future direction of basketball.
