The Washington Nationals have agreed to a four-year contract extension with center fielder Jacob Young, securing the 27-year-old defensive standout for the foreseeable future in a deal that caught many observers off guard.

According to reports from Robert Murray of FanSided and others, the contract guarantees Young $23 million and includes a club option for a fifth year valued at $8 million.

A $2 million assignment bonus if he is traded at any point is also part of the agreement, which could push the total value into the $30-31 million range over the full term.

The Nationals have not yet formally confirmed the pact, which remains pending a physical.

Young, selected by Washington in the seventh round of the 2021 draft out of the University of Florida, had been under club control through the 2029 season and was set to enter arbitration for the first time this winter. Projections had placed his first arbitration salary around $2.3 million.

The new deal buys out his remaining arbitration years along with what would have been his first free-agent season in 2030, with the option covering 2031. It represents a calculated investment in a player whose primary value has always resided in his glove and speed rather than his bat.

In 2026, Young delivered his strongest offensive season to date, batting .252 with a .318 on-base percentage and .390 slugging percentage across 140 games. He hit 10 home runs and drove in 50 runs while stealing 18 bases in 22 attempts.

Those numbers marked a clear step forward from prior campaigns, when his production at the plate had been more limited, though he still finished with a 94 OPS+.

His defense remained elite, ranking in the 96th percentile for outs above average, and he contributed roughly 1.8 Wins Above Replacement according to Baseball-Reference.

Since establishing himself as the Nationals’ primary center fielder in 2024, Young has consistently ranked among the game’s best range and reliability in the outfield.

The extension is particularly noteworthy because Young’s name had surfaced repeatedly in trade discussions in recent months.

The New York Yankees, among other clubs, had shown interest in him at various points, and Washington itself had explored the market for the outfielder last winter while assessing returns.

With a thin free-agent class of center fielders available this offseason and the Nationals still navigating a rebuilding phase—they improved by 11 wins to finish 77-85 in 2026—many expected the club to keep listening on Young rather than commit long-term.

Instead, the organization has chosen cost certainty on a player whose floor as a defensive specialist and fourth outfielder remains high even if his bat plateaus.

For Young, the deal locks in a life-changing sum while the Nationals retain a core piece alongside other long-term commitments such as catcher Keibert Ruiz and starter Cade Cavalli.

Whether the move signals a broader shift toward retaining talent or simply reflects the value of elite defense in a thin market remains to be seen as the offseason unfolds.
