The Los Angeles Chargers entered the week as the NFL’s only winless team, sitting at 0-7 with the trade deadline just days away.

In most cases, a club in that position would be actively shopping its most marketable veterans.

Instead, the organization has taken the opposite approach with edge rusher Khalil Mack, drawing raised eyebrows across the league.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that the Chargers have steadfastly told other teams they like their core and are not moving players. As a result, they have rebuffed overtures for Mack.

Breer noted that it remains to be seen whether that posture holds if Los Angeles fails to beat the Houston Texans at home on Sunday.

The stance is especially striking given the circumstances. Mack is 35 and playing on a one-year contract that expires after the season.

He has remained productive, recording three sacks and generating consistent pressure while playing the bulk of the defensive snaps.

Contending teams looking for an edge-rush boost have inquired, with the Chicago Bears among those linked to a potential reunion.

For a team with virtually no realistic playoff path, declining to explore a return of draft capital for an aging rental has left rival general managers puzzled.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh reinforced the organization’s public position earlier in the week.

Asked about Mack’s future, he said he wants the veteran in Los Angeles, that Mack wants to stay, and that he remains one of the pillars of the team.

Those comments align with the broader message that the Chargers are not waving any sort of white flag, even after seven straight losses. General manager Joe Hortiz has taken the same line in conversations with other clubs.

Still, the situation could shift quickly. Breer’s reporting left the door open for a change of heart if the Chargers drop another game this weekend.

With the deadline arriving soon after, any late reversal would likely come under pressure and with limited leverage.

For now, though, Los Angeles is holding firm on one of its most accomplished players at a moment when almost every other team in a similar spot would be open for business.

The decision has become one of the more curious storylines surrounding this year’s deadline.
