The Tampa Bay Rays have locked in designated hitter Yandy Diaz for the 2027 season at a guaranteed $13 million, completing a process that began when he crossed the 500-plate-appearance threshold earlier in the year.

The decision was reported by Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times.

That mark converted what would have been a $10 million club option into a higher figure, provided he stayed healthy through the end of the campaign. Diaz did exactly that, allowing the deal to become official after the postseason.

At 35, Diaz delivered another strong year as the Rays’ primary DH.

He batted .293 with 22 home runs and led the American League with 180 hits while posting a mark at least 20 percent better than league average for the fifth straight season.

Those numbers kept him near the top of a lineup that carried Tampa Bay to the American League pennant.

His contributions extended into October. Across 59 postseason at-bats he posted a .742 OPS, and he was especially effective in the ALCS against Cleveland, hitting .333 with two home runs.

One of those, a two-run shot in the eighth inning of Game 6, helped clinch the series for the Rays before they fell to Milwaukee in the World Series.

The arrangement traces back to a three-year, $24 million extension Diaz signed ahead of the 2023 season. That deal has proven beneficial for Tampa Bay even as the annual cost has climbed into the mid-30s of his career.

The club exercised his 2026 option early and simultaneously added the 2027 vesting provision; he earned $12 million this past year and will receive a modest raise next season after clearing the plate-appearance bar.

Power has never been Diaz’s calling card the way it is for many first basemen or designated hitters, yet he has shown improvement in that area.

He has now reached 22 or more home runs in three of the last four seasons, following a career-high 25 in 2025 that came with the asterisk of the Rays playing home games in a minor-league park.

With Diaz returning, Tampa Bay’s offensive core is expected to look largely familiar in 2027.

The only notable roster subtraction on that side is outfielder Cedric Mullins, whose option was not exercised, leaving the fourth-outfield role open.

The club could still explore upgrades through trades or free agency, but the foundation that helped produce an AL pennant remains largely intact.
