Indiana Pacers Slammed With Even More Brutal Injury News

Ben Sheppard will be out “months” rather than weeks, Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Wednesday, without offering a timetable.

Wednesday’s surgery on the torn meniscus in Sheppard’s left knee showed he needed a full repair, Tony East of Circle City Spin reported.

Carlisle first announced the surgery Monday in Milwaukee, Steve Megargee of The Associated Press reported.

Carlisle traced the tear to the season opener at New Orleans when he first raised it, before the Oct. 23 home opener against the Dallas Mavericks.

“Ben Sheppard’s gonna be out for a little bit. He’s got a left knee meniscus thing that happened in the New Orleans game,” Carlisle said Oct. 23. “Uncertain of the timetable. Possibility that it may not be too long but we’re not really certain at this point. But there’s a chance he could be back in a couple of weeks, or a bit longer, it’s uncertain at this point.”

Indiana’s injury report that night moved Sheppard from a sore left knee to a torn left meniscus.

Sheppard had 3 points on 1-of-3 shooting, 1 rebound and 4 fouls in the 123-120 win on Oct. 21, still his only game of the season.

Carlisle also said Wednesday that Tyrese Haliburton, four games into his comeback from a torn right Achilles tendon, will miss time with a left hamstring strain.

Sheppard, 25, was the No. 26 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft out of Belmont. He has played 185 regular-season games across three seasons, all with Indiana.

Across 65 games last season, Sheppard averaged 7.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 21.4 minutes. He hit 84 of his 232 3-point attempts, a 36.2 percent mark.

This is the final season of his four-year, $13.02 million rookie-scale contract. He is earning $5.03 million in 2026-27.

A $7.93 million qualifying offer next summer would keep Indiana’s matching rights when Sheppard reaches restricted free agency.

The Pacers play at the Miami Heat on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and host the Brooklyn Nets at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET.
