Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Nelson Velázquez has been released by the Houston Astros, clearing the way for the 27-year-old to pursue an opportunity in Asia, via the MLB transaction log.

For Cubs fans, the news closes another chapter on a prospect who once generated real intrigue in the organization but ultimately proved a disappointment at Wrigley Field.

Velázquez, drafted by the Cubs in the fifth round in 2017 out of P.J. Education in Puerto Rico, rose through the system on the strength of raw power.

He won MVP honors in the 2021 Arizona Fall League after an explosive showing that put him on the radar as a potential corner outfield or designated hitter contributor.

His major-league debut came in 2022, when he appeared in 77 games and posted a .205/.286/.373 line with six home runs.

Contact issues were already evident—he struck out nearly 32% of the time—and the power never fully translated into consistent production.

A brief 2023 stint with the Cubs showed flashes (three homers in 13 games, including a grand slam), but the organization dealt him to the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline for reliever José Cuas.

Velázquez then enjoyed a hot stretch with Kansas City (14 home runs in 40 games), underscoring the tools the Cubs had seen.

Those flashes proved fleeting. Across his full major-league career, Velázquez has hit .208/.282/.429 with 37 home runs in 728 plate appearances, undermined by a career strikeout rate around 29.5% and a swinging-strike rate of 16.1%.

In 2026 he split time between the Cardinals and Astros, hitting .188/.257/.406 with six homers in 52 games before Houston moved on.

The Cubs’ decision to trade him in 2023 looks sound in hindsight: he never established himself as a reliable big-league bat in Chicago, and the high-contact problems that limited him there followed him elsewhere.

While the power potential was real, Velázquez never refined the approach needed to become a regular contributor for the North Siders.

Now free to seek regular playing time overseas, Velázquez exits MLB as a classic case of a toolsy prospect who couldn’t turn raw ability into sustained success.

For the Wrigley faithful, his career serves as a reminder of how many promising young hitters pass through the system without ever sticking on the North Side.
