The Houston Astros released outfielder Nelson Velázquez this week, allowing the 27-year-old to pursue a playing opportunity with a club in Asia.
The move, revealed via the MLB transaction log, ends a brief and circuitous stint with the organization while freeing a minor-league roster spot as Houston turns toward the offseason.
Velázquez, a right-handed-hitting corner outfielder and designated hitter from Carolina, Puerto Rico, arrived in Houston via waiver claim from the St. Louis Cardinals on August 10.
He had opened the 2026 season on a minor-league deal with St. Louis, earned a big-league call-up in late May, and posted a .722 OPS with four home runs in 34 games before being designated for assignment in early August.
With the Astros, he appeared in 18 regular-season games and went 3-for-27 with two home runs and 13 strikeouts.
Houston designated him for assignment after roughly 10 days, he cleared waivers and elected free agency, then re-signed with the club on a minor-league deal in late August.
His most memorable moment in an Astros uniform came in the postseason.
In Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Chicago White Sox, Velázquez entered as a pinch-hitter and delivered a two-run home run in a 6-3 loss.
He finished the series 1-for-3 as the White Sox swept Houston. Across the full regular season with St. Louis and Houston, he hit .188/.257/.406 with six home runs in 52 games and 113 plate appearances.
A former Cubs prospect who also played for the Royals, Velázquez has shown legitimate power throughout his major-league career.
He has 37 home runs and a .221 isolated-power mark in 728 plate appearances since debuting in 2022.
Consistent contact has been the persistent obstacle: he owns a career 29.5 percent strikeout rate and a 16.1 percent swinging-strike rate.
Defensively he has graded below average in the corners after struggling when tried in center field early in his career.
At the time of his release Velázquez was not occupying a 40-man roster spot. The Astros finished the 2026 season 81-81 and reached the playoffs before the early exit.
For Velázquez, the move to Asia offers the prospect of everyday at-bats that have been hard to secure in the majors.
Specific destination details have not been announced, but reports indicate he is expected to land with a club overseas in search of a fresh opportunity and more consistent playing time.
