The Washington Capitals have opened the door for Ivan Miroshnichenko to explore trade options, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, who highlighted the 22-year-old forward’s situation on Saturday Headlines.

Miroshnichenko was selected 20th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft but has appeared in just three games this season—including a goal against Montreal—and cannot crack a regular spot in Washington’s lineup.

The Capitals’ forward depth has become crowded with additions such as Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, and Boone Jenner, alongside emerging contributions from players like Justin Sourdif, Ryan Leonard, and Ilya Protas, leaving the former first-round pick on the outside looking in.

On Monday, Friedman provided an update on the situation, stressing that Washington is not looking to move Miroshnichenko for the sake of clearing roster space.

The organization has explicitly told interested clubs that any deal must bring a legitimate return. They have no intention of placing him on waivers, confident he would be claimed, and will only complete a trade if the compensation meets their threshold for value.

This stance underscores Friedman’s view of Miroshnichenko as an asset with real upside rather than a player to be discarded cheaply. Earlier reports from the insider indicated that multiple teams have been monitoring him closely, believing he is capable of contributing at the NHL level if given consistent opportunities.

Miroshnichenko’s NHL resume remains limited—55 games and 14 points across four seasons—largely because infrequent appearances have prevented him from establishing a rhythm.

In the American Hockey League, however, he has shown steady production, including strong seasons with the Hershey Bears that included a role in their 2024 Calder Cup championship.

Scouts have long praised his skating, shooting ability, and offensive instincts, traits that helped him rise as a prospect before a Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in early 2022 temporarily slowed his trajectory.

Fully recovered and now a 6-foot-1, 205-pound winger, he represents the kind of unfinished first-round talent that clubs often target as a low-cost bet on future production.

Friedman has framed the situation as one where Washington holds leverage.

Because the Capitals refuse to risk losing him for nothing via waivers, any acquiring team must offer something meaningful—likely in the range of a mid-round draft pick or comparable young asset—to pry him loose.

For a player who has yet to receive the ice time needed to prove himself regularly at the highest level, that threshold suggests Friedman sees meaningful trade value rooted in untapped potential and demonstrated minor-league scoring.

Whether that interest translates into a completed deal remains uncertain, but Friedman’s reporting makes clear that the Capitals expect to be compensated properly if they part with their young winger.
