49ers Star Fred Warner Gets Brutally Honest After Falcons Loss

The San Francisco 49ers absorbed their first defeat of the 2026 season Sunday, falling 29-20 to the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium after committing four turnovers and allowing Michael Penix Jr. to carve up their defense.

San Francisco dropped to 6-1 while Atlanta improved to 3-4. The 49ers entered the game having turned the ball over only six times across their first six contests. They matched that total in one afternoon, with Brock Purdy throwing two interceptions and the offense losing two fumbles.

Purdy finished 27 of 40 for 288 yards, one touchdown and the two picks. His second interception, by rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels with just over two minutes remaining, helped seal the outcome after San Francisco had climbed back within striking distance.

Penix completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He connected with Nick Muse, Kyle Pitts and Drake London for scores as Atlanta scored 13 points off the 49ers’ giveaways and seized control after trailing 14-3 early.

The 49ers generated 400 total yards to Atlanta’s 295, yet the turnover margin and seven penalties for 55 yards proved decisive. Four of those penalties came on defense and extended Falcons drives. Special teams also struggled, with kicker Eddy Pineiro missing his fourth extra point of the season and kick coverage surrendering long returns.

Linebacker Fred Warner, who recorded 13 tackles in the loss, offered a blunt assessment afterward.

“We just didn’t play complementary football in all three phases,” Warner said. “Defensively, I felt like it was super sloppy all day. Of course, I have to look at myself and the way I’m communicating with the rest of the group and the way we’re executing.

“But at the end of the day, you can’t beat yourself. They came out, they played better than us, and we have to deal with that result… Unfortunately, we’re not going undefeated this year. That’s how I look at it. I said all along, it’s not just about winning. We have to continue to get better as a team. I feel like today we didn’t get better. We took a step back.”

Christian McCaffrey was limited by a thigh injury after scoring on a one-yard run early and contributing in the passing game. Rookie Kaelon Black added a 30-yard touchdown run and finished with 63 yards on 12 carries before losing a fumble. George Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards but also coughed up a late fumble.

With a bye week next on the schedule, Warner stressed the need to reset without dwelling on the setback.

“That doesn’t mean that we can’t use this bye the right way, get healthy, get our mind right for what we have ahead of us, and be better going forward,” Warner said. “I’m excited about the challenge. I love that group in there. This is the most fun I’ve had playing football, playing with this group.

“We have so much talent. We have so many guys that play the right way. If we can clean things up, which I know we will, then we have a great chance every single week that we step out there.”

Tight end George Kittle echoed the disappointment while viewing the loss as a potential catalyst.

“I would have much rather won, but the great thing about losing is never great,” Kittle said. “When you do lose, especially in this organization, it makes everybody really look at themselves in the mirror. All I think it’s going to do is spark an even bigger fire underneath us. All we want to do is win. We want to continue to win.

“We want to put good tape out there. Sometimes, I think it’s definitely going to sour our entire bye week. I think that’s good because when we get back next week, our guys are going to be incredibly focused and have great intent.”

The 49ers had built an early advantage on touchdowns by McCaffrey and Black, but Atlanta responded with 23 consecutive points. Penix operated with minimal pressure, and the Falcons’ opportunistic defense capitalized on San Francisco’s self-inflicted wounds, including three turnovers inside the Atlanta 30.

Coach Kyle Shanahan’s team has emphasized improvement over pure results during its strong start, and the Week 7 outcome underscored that message. The bye provides time to address injuries, including absences of several receivers and edge rusher Nick Bosa, before returning to action.
