San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner has been fined a total of $65,673 by the NFL for two separate unnecessary roughness violations during the team’s 23-17 victory over the Washington Commanders on October 19.

The league’s latest player accountability report assessed a $47,762 penalty for illegal use of the helmet and a $17,911 fine for a hit on a defenseless player.

Both incidents occurred in the fourth quarter, with the helmet violation coming with 7:08 remaining and the contact against a defenseless opponent at the 14:05 mark.

The larger amount matches the league’s published second-offense fine for impermissible helmet use under the 2026 schedule, which starts at $23,882 for a first offense.

These penalties continue a costly pattern for the All-Pro linebacker.

After the 49ers’ Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Warner received a $23,882 fine for illegal helmet use against tight end Trey McBride and a $17,911 penalty for a hip-drop tackle on the same player that went unflagged on the field.

Combined with the new sanctions, his announced fines for the 2026 season now stand at $107,466 across four unnecessary-roughness violations, two of which involved illegal helmet use.

The physical style that has made Warner a defensive cornerstone has repeatedly drawn league review even as San Francisco has remained undefeated.

The punishments arrive under a stricter disciplinary framework that the NFL and Players Association implemented before the season.

The agreement increases penalties for five player-safety categories, including hip-drop tackles, launching, and hits on defenseless players.

A player who accumulates three qualifying violations in the same category faces a one-game suspension. Warner already carries one hip-drop violation and one hit on a defenseless player this season.

The two helmet-use fines escalate the financial consequences under the published schedule, though they do not automatically place him at the suspension threshold for the specified categories. He retains the right to appeal the monetary penalties through the league’s process.

The fines add another layer of scrutiny to a defense that has leaned on Warner’s leadership while dealing with other absences. San Francisco, still seeking to improve to 7-0, faces the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

For now, the league’s discipline remains limited to financial hits rather than time away from the field, but the accumulating violations underscore the tighter standards governing contact in 2026.

Warner’s ability to maintain his aggressive approach while staying clear of further qualifying infractions will be watched closely as the season progresses.
