Karl-Anthony Towns entered the 2026-27 season without a new contract extension from the New York Knicks, even after helping the franchise capture its first championship in more than five decades.

The defending champions’ star center remains eligible for a four-year deal that could reach as high as $276 million, yet the sides remain separated by a significant gap.

Towns has repeatedly indicated a willingness to accept less than the maximum, following the example set by teammate Jalen Brunson, but the Knicks’ reported four-year, roughly $200 million proposal falls well short of what he is prepared to accept.

Good news for Knicks fans, though.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, league observers largely expect the two sides to close the remaining distance at some point during the 2026-27 regular season. Siegel reported that many around the NBA anticipate an agreement materializing in the middle of the year.

Should that fail to happen, however, the belief is that Towns would decline his $61 million player option for 2027-28 and enter unrestricted free agency next summer.

That outcome would leave the Knicks facing the possibility of losing a key piece of their title team without compensation, a scenario both the organization and Towns appear motivated to avoid.

The prevailing expectation around the league in recent weeks has been that Towns is seeking something in the $225 million to $240 million range over four years.

That figure would place his average annual value near the roughly $54 million mark recently secured by Cleveland’s Evan Mobley on a longer-term extension.

At 30 years old and turning 31 in November, Towns views this as potentially his last major payday and wants compensation that still reflects his status among the NBA’s top centers while preserving enough flexibility for the Knicks to keep their championship core intact.

Towns has been candid about the stalled talks.

He described himself as “very disappointed” after the organization announced it would pause extension discussions until later in the season in order to focus on the start of the campaign.

At the same time, he has stressed that the situation is simply business and that his immediate priority is the games ahead.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, he reinforced that keeping the current group together has been his main goal and that a maximum contract “was nowhere in my mind.”

Brunson, seated beside him, offered a concise response when asked what he hoped to see: “Sign the contract.”

For now, the focus remains on basketball, with the understanding that serious negotiations are likely to resume once the season is well underway.
