A recent trade proposal has the New York Yankees pursuing a major roster shift by targeting Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan in a four-player package.

Under the framework outlined by FanSided analyst Matthew Swigonski, New York would land the two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, while sending first baseman Luis Garcia Jr., outfielder Jasson Dominguez, and pitching prospect Luis Serna the other way.

The concept arrives after another early postseason exit for the Yankees, who were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS and appear open to reshaping a roster that has reached October frequently but fallen short of a World Series.

At the center of the return package sits Garcia, whom the Yankees acquired from the Washington Nationals at the 2026 trade deadline. He put together a great campaign, finishing the season with a .277 batting average, 30 home runs, and 92 RBIs.

Those numbers gave the lineup a left-handed bat capable of driving in runs against right-handed pitching, yet the proposal treats him as movable.

Flipping a player acquired only months earlier would free payroll and roster flexibility while supplying Cleveland with a proven middle-of-the-order presence.

For the Guardians, who may be reluctant to commit long-term money to Kwan entering his final year of control, Garcia offers a ready-made power complement without requiring a lengthy extension.

Kwan himself represents the clear upgrade New York would seek. Coming off a one-year, $7.725 million deal, he posted a .282 average with just three home runs and 32 RBIs, numbers that underscore his contact-oriented approach rather than pure power.

His ability to put the ball in play, reach base, and patrol the outfield at a high level has made him a perennial defensive standout and a natural table-setter.

In the Yankees’ lineup, those traits could slot him into the leadoff spot ahead of established power threats, while his Gold Glove résumé addresses defensive shortcomings that have factored into recent October disappointments.

Because he reaches free agency after 2027, his cost in talent is expected to be lower than a player with more remaining control, making a deal centered on Garcia and younger pieces more plausible.

Dominguez, still only 23, is viewed as blocked in New York’s outfield and could benefit from a change of scenery in Cleveland, while Serna, a 22-year-old who spent the previous season in High-A, functions as a secondary arm in the package.

Whether the Yankees ultimately pursue Kwan remains uncertain, yet the proposal highlights a clear strategic fork: retain the deadline acquisition who produced 30 home runs, or exchange him for a high-contact, high-defense outfielder who could reshape the top of the order and the outfield alignment.

For a franchise seeking a different postseason outcome, the trade-off between Garcia’s power and Kwan’s on-base and defensive skills forms the core tension of the idea.
