The Atlanta Braves have spent the past several seasons searching for stability at shortstop without fully solving the position.

Ha-Seong Kim’s tenure produced less than expected, while Mauricio Dubón has filled in capably yet remains better suited as a versatile utility piece than a permanent everyday starter.

That ongoing gap has left the lineup thinner in the middle of the diamond than a contending team prefers, particularly as the club looks to maximize its remaining championship window around an aging but still talented core.

Acquiring a young, controllable shortstop with proven offensive production would address both the immediate need and longer-term flexibility.

As Christopher Kline of FanSided outlines, one realistic path involves dealing with the Los Angeles Angels for Zach Neto.

Under team control through 2029 at a manageable cost, the 25-year-old shortstop just completed a season with 27 home runs, 24 stolen bases, a .766 OPS, and a 116 wRC+ that ranked among the better marks at the position.

From Atlanta’s standpoint, he would arrive as a ready-made right-handed bat capable of slotting into the middle of the order immediately while also providing the kind of defensive reliability the club has lacked.

Kline’s proposed return package centers on right-hander J.R. Ritchie, who logged 73.1 innings with a 4.91 ERA in his first major-league exposure yet still profiles as a high-upside arm with a usable four-pitch mix.

The deal would also send 2025 first-round pick and top-prospect Tate Southisene, a potential five-tool infielder, along with left-hander Henrick Hernandez, Atlanta’s No. 12 prospect who is close to contributing at the big-league level.

For the Braves, the cost is steep but not prohibitive given their pitching depth and the specific fit.

Ritchie is not currently in the rotation mix with Spencer Schwellenbach and A.J. Smith-Shawver expected back at full strength, and Southisene remains a prospect rather than a finished product.

Neto’s combination of power, speed, and years of control would strengthen an offense that has sometimes needed another impact bat, potentially freeing the front office to explore other moves around the roster.

Defensive concerns exist on both sides of any such swap, yet Neto’s overall value as a middle-of-the-order regular under long-term control outweighs the risk for a team trying to stay competitive without overextending its prospect capital.

In an offseason where shortstop upgrades remain scarce, this is the kind of targeted acquisition that aligns with how the Braves have built contenders before.
