The Chicago Bears offered no new information Wednesday on nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon, leaving the veteran’s return date unclear as the team prepares for Monday night against Philadelphia.
Gordon began the season on the physically unable to perform list with a calf injury. He missed training camp and the entire preseason. Soft-tissue problems also limited him to three regular-season games in 2025.
The three-year, $40 million extension he signed in April 2025 made him the highest-paid nickel cornerback in the league at the time. The deal runs through 2028 and carries a 2026 cap charge of about $12.91 million.
Gordon has 198 tackles, five interceptions, 17 pass breakups and five fumble recoveries in 45 career games. Those numbers came mostly in 2022 through 2024. Last season he recorded seven tackles and one sack in three appearances.
General manager Ryan Poles and coach Ben Johnson have both voiced frustration in recent weeks about Gordon’s availability and the lack of a firm return window.
On Sept. 8, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported: “#Bears standout CB Kyler Gordon, who is on IR with a calf injury, is away from the team working with his own trainer to accelerate recovery, sources say. The plan is for Gordon to return a few weeks into the season and begin practicing shortly thereafter. Some optimism here.”
That optimism was not echoed Wednesday. Asked whether Gordon had taken steps toward returning, Johnson said, “I’ve got nothing to add there.”
The silence has prompted outside talk of a trade. Harrison Graham of Chicago Bears Now wrote that Chicago should move Gordon if a buyer appears.
“I don’t know if there’s a single team that would trade for Kyler Gordon, but if there is, might as well do that at this point.” He added, “And, yes, you can trade a player who’s on the PUP List.”
Any deal would likely bring modest value. Gordon has not stayed healthy for nearly two seasons, and a mid-to-late Day 3 draft pick is the most common projection if Chicago finds a taker.
Trading him now would also thin an already battered secondary. Safety Coby Bryant is out for the season after August knee surgery. Outside corner Tyrique Stevenson strained a hamstring in the second half of Sunday’s 9-3 loss to Minnesota and is week to week.
Stevenson finished that game with five tackles and one pass breakup. He has 14 tackles through two games. The Bears are 1-1 after a 59-37 win at Carolina in Week 1.
Rookie fourth-round pick Malik Muhammad has started in the slot while Gordon has been out and already has an interception. Recently acquired Clark Phillips III is expected to fill in on the outside while Stevenson recovers.
Chicago also signed veteran Nick McCloud to the practice squad this week for extra depth. If Gordon returns later, Muhammad could slide outside and Phillips could move back into a reserve role.
The Bears face the 2-0 Eagles on Monday night at Soldier Field. Johnson’s one-sentence update left little indication Gordon will be part of that plan.
