The Philadelphia Eagles have terminated the contract of wide receiver Danny Gray, who had been on the team’s practice squad, via the NFL transaction wire.

Gray, born April 1, 1999, was a third-round pick (105th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 out of SMU after starring at Blinn College.

He appeared in 13 games as a rookie and finished with one catch for 10 yards and one rush for nine yards.

A 2023 shoulder injury cost him that season; San Francisco waived him in August 2024.

Philadelphia signed him to its practice squad that September. He was part of the Super Bowl LIX championship roster even though he did not play in the regular season or postseason.

The Eagles have repeatedly brought him back. After a 2025 finger injury and a mid-camp waiver, they re-signed him to the practice squad in November 2025 and gave him a reserve/future deal in January 2026.

He was released again at final cuts on Aug. 30–31, 2026, then added back to the practice squad on Sept. 1.

On Friday, Sept. 11, the team placed Gray on the practice-squad injured list with an undisclosed injury and signed return specialist Xavier Gipson in a corresponding move.

Then, on Sept. 18, the Eagles decided to release Gray from their practice squad entirely.

Philadelphia largely revamped its receiving corps during the offseason, trading away disgruntled wide receiver A.J. Brown to hand No. 1 receiver duties to DeVonta Smith.

The Eagles also swung a trade to acquire Dontayvion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers and selected former USC star Makai Lemon in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Given the depth that Philadelphia has at the position, there really is no room for Gray on the roster, and evidently, the Eagles no longer wanted to keep him on their practice squad. At least for now.

Philadelphia can always bring him back at some point.

The Eagles got off to a 1-0 start this season, defeating the Washington Commanders in Week 1. They will face the Tennessee Titans on the road this Sunday.
