The Philadelphia Eagles have once again used a familiar piece of salary-cap gymnastics to buy themselves breathing room, this time by restructuring the deal of linebacker Nolan Smith, via Spotrac.

The most consequential part of the transaction is not the modest relief it produces in 2026, but the roughly $10 million it opens on the 2027 ledger.

Smith is entering the fourth season of the four-year rookie contract he signed after Philadelphia selected him 30th overall in 2023. The Eagles had already exercised his fifth-year option, locking him in for 2027 at a fully guaranteed $13.752 million.

By converting $12.5 million of that option-year salary into an option bonus, the club can now spread the charge across multiple seasons instead of absorbing nearly the entire sum in a single cap year.

The result, according to cap-tracking reports, is a 2027 hit that drops from $13.75 million to just over $4 million and creates $10 million in additional space next year.

That kind of forward-looking maneuver is typical of Howie Roseman’s approach. The Eagles routinely convert base salary into bonus money that can be prorated, sometimes adding void years so the immediate cap cost stays low while the salary cap itself continues to rise.

The trade-off is future dead money if the player is released or traded before the bonus is fully amortized. In an era of an expanding cap, Philadelphia has consistently judged that risk acceptable.

A smaller conversion this season—$1.24 million of Smith’s 2026 salary turned into a signing bonus—produced just under $1 million in current-year space.

The Eagles were already operating with limited room, so even that incremental amount gives the front office more flexibility to add a veteran or absorb an in-season promotion without first creating corresponding cuts.

The larger 2027 windfall, however, is the move that matters most for long-term roster construction. It preserves optionality for another extension cycle, another free-agent signing, or simply the ability to keep more of the existing core together when several larger contracts come due.

Smith himself remains a developmental piece rather than a finished product. The former five-star Georgia recruit and national champion has shown flashes, including a productive 2024 stretch and a strong Super Bowl LIX run, but injuries limited him to 12 games and modest production in 2025.

The restructure does not change his on-field role; it simply postpones a larger financial decision until the team has more information about whether he can become a consistent edge presence.

By turning a guaranteed option-year salary into a prorated bonus, the Eagles have converted a potential 2027 constraint into $10 million of usable space.

It is a small, technical transaction that nevertheless illustrates how the organization continues to manage the cap as a multi-year puzzle rather than a single-season problem.
