The Indianapolis Colts made a roster adjustment on Monday, waiving cornerback Johnathan Edwards one day after their season-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Colts announced the move on their team website.
Edwards was inactive for that contest, a 41-23 defeat in which Indianapolis struggled to contain Baltimore’s passing attack. The move opens a roster spot as the team prepares for Week 2 and welcomes back Cam Taylor-Britt, who has completed a one-game suspension.
Edwards arrived in Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 draft, signing out of Tulane after three earlier seasons at Indiana State.
The St. Louis native, listed at 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, earned a relatively strong guaranteed package among that year’s undrafted class and rewarded the investment by making the initial 53-man roster. He was the only undrafted rookie to do so.
Over 14 games and five starts in 2025, he recorded 26 tackles and three passes defensed while also contributing on special teams, the latter role that helped him survive early roster cuts.
His coverage results were mixed. Edwards showed length and closing speed that allowed him to stay with receivers at times, yet he surrendered completions at a high clip and allowed sizable yards after the catch.
Those inconsistencies carried into the 2026 preseason, where he again allowed a high completion percentage and large gains on limited targets.
When the regular season began, the Colts chose to elevate practice-squad corner Kenneth Harris for special-teams work against Baltimore rather than dress Edwards.
Taylor-Britt’s return now gives the secondary another experienced body behind established starters.
Edwards, 24, still possesses the athletic traits that first attracted the Colts, and he could draw interest on the waiver wire from clubs looking for depth and special-teams help.
For Indianapolis, the decision reflects a crowded cornerback room and the immediate need to add a player who can contribute this week rather than continue developing a young defender whose opportunities had already begun to shrink.
Edwards’ path from FCS starter to FBS transfer to NFL roster player remains a credit to his work ethic. Whether another team gives him a second chance will depend on how quickly he can tighten his technique and prove more reliable in coverage than he has shown so far.
The Colts, meanwhile, turn their attention to Kansas City after a disappointing opener and a quiet but telling roster change.
