There are moments when the Academy feels closer than the brick and granite of Bancroft Hall. Watching former Navy star Landon Robinson walk through the players’ tunnel at Paycor Stadium in full Service Dress before the Cincinnati Bengals’ first game of the season was one of them.

For those still wearing the uniform, or who only recently took it off, it was not simply a fashion statement.
Robinson came out of Navy football the way most of graduates understand the program: late-round, overlooked, and built on habits that do not photograph well until they suddenly do.
Seventh-round picks do not usually command the NFL’s attention before kickoff. A defensive tackle from Annapolis arriving in the same coat and combination cover that midshipmen wear to Sunday chapel or a change-of-command does.
The clip spread quickly because it looked like conviction rather than costume. He did not borrow the look for content. He showed up as himself.
That matters more than the subsequent inactive list. The Bengals have veterans on the interior line and a first-year roster still finding its shape. Being a healthy scratch in Week 1 is disappointing, not disqualifying.
Anyone who has sat through a bye week or a depth-chart shuffle at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium already knows the difference. The work continues. The next chance is Houston.
What lingered was the reaction from people who have never set foot on the Yard. Former players, beat writers, and the league’s own account treated the entrance as something rare.
In a league that prizes individual branding, the Bengals rookie choosing the service dress of the institution that formed him registered as integrity. Midshipmen recognize that choice immediately.
You do not put on Service Dress to be noticed. You put it on because it is the correct thing to wear when the occasion calls for it.
Robinson’s career so far has followed a familiar Navy pattern: outwork the projection, stay available, accept the role that exists rather than the one advertised.
He has even lined up as a fullback in short-yardage packages, the kind of extra duty that Academy teammates understand without needing an explanation. The NFL will decide how many snaps he receives. The rest of us already know what the entrance represented.
Robinson was listed among Bengals inactives for the team’s Week 1 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he already made enough of an impression. At least for Navy alums.
A Navy graduate walked into his first regular-season Sunday looking like what he is. For midshipmen watching from a distance, that was enough.
