The Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl defense began with an unexpected jolt on Wednesday night at Lumen Field. Sam Darnold lasted just one possession against the New England Patriots before a sack by former Seahawk Dre’Mont Jones sent him hobbling toward the sideline.

He completed one of two passes for 13 yards, then disappeared into the medical tent and later the locker room. Officials first listed him as questionable and soon ruled him out with a hip injury, handing the offense to Drew Lock for the rest of the opener.

The Seahawks have not released a more precise diagnosis. What they have said is only that Darnold suffered a hip injury and would not return. That limited information left room for outside interpretation, and sports medicine physician Jesse Morse offered one on social media after watching the replay.

Morse’s primary concern, he wrote on X, was a “Hip (posterior) labral tear (possible fracture) after right knee jammed into the socket.” He added that Darnold “may have also suffered a right PCL sprain in his knee.”

Those comments remain an independent reading of the mechanism rather than a team-confirmed finding. Morse had earlier noted that the same collision could produce a hip pointer, a hip-flexor strain, a bone bruise, or a fracture.

Recovery timelines for those possibilities differ sharply, which is why the distinction between speculation and official imaging matters. Until Seattle announces results from further evaluation, Morse’s remarks should be treated as informed possibilities rather than a final diagnosis.

The timing of the injury magnified its impact. Darnold had thrown for more than 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025 and then steered a turnover-free postseason that ended with a Super Bowl LX title.

Facing the same Patriots team Seattle had beaten in that championship game, he was supposed to open a new title defense in front of a packed home crowd.

Instead the night became a sudden test of quarterback depth. Lock, the established backup, took over on the second series while second-year quarterback Jalen Milroe served as the emergency third option.

One modest consolation sits on the calendar. Because Seattle opened the season on a Wednesday, the Seahawks do not play again until Sunday, September 20, in Arizona. That stretch gives Darnold ten full days before Week 2 if imaging shows something manageable.

Whether those days prove sufficient will depend entirely on what the scans reveal.

For now, the only certainty is that a championship team’s first drive of the new year ended with its starting quarterback walking off the field and a doctor on social media raising questions the organization has not yet answered.
