The Houston Texans have brought defensive end Dominique Robinson back onto the roster after a brief departure during the final wave of cuts.

Robinson was released Sunday as the club trimmed to 53 players. The team quickly moved to re-sign him, keeping the former Chicago Bear in the building as he continues to work through a calf injury.

The 28-year-old first joined Houston in March on a one-year deal after four seasons with the Bears. He spent camp competing for a rotational role on a crowded defensive line.

He strained his calf in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders and was described as day-to-day in the days that followed. The injury limited him at times and made his roster status uncertain heading into cut-down weekend.

When the Texans announced their initial 53-man roster, Robinson was among the veterans let go. The move lasted only a short time before Houston circled back and re-signed him.

That sequence is common around the league at this time of year. Teams often release a player to create space, then add him again once other transactions settle.

Robinson’s length and pass-rush tools still appeal to the coaching staff. Houston already has established ends on the roster, so he is expected to compete for snaps rather than start.

The calf remains the main question. A lower-leg issue can linger if a player is rushed back, and the Texans have other options if he needs more time.

Houston also placed several players on injured reserve as it finalized the roster. Wide receiver Tank Dell will start the year on IR with a designation to return after his knee injury.

Those moves thinned the offense more than the defensive line. That depth on the edge is one reason the club could afford a short-term release of Robinson and then bring him back.

The Bears, Robinson’s previous team, dealt with their own late-August injury issues at wide receiver. Chicago placed Ray-Ray McCloud on injured reserve during the same cut-down period.

Those Chicago developments do not affect Houston’s roster math. They do show how quickly depth charts shift in the final days before the regular season.

Robinson recorded modest sack totals in Chicago and never locked down a starting job. His best stretch came last season in a limited role.

The Texans open the season at home against Buffalo. Whether Robinson is ready for that game will depend on how the calf responds in the next two weeks.

If he is not fully healthy, Houston can keep him on the 53 and manage his workload or use the practice squad if further roster shuffling occurs.

For now, the message is straightforward. The Texans let him go for a moment and then decided they still wanted him on the team.

Robinson will continue rehabbing and practicing as the club prepares for Week 1. The brief departure is over. He is back in Houston’s plans.
