Tampa Bay waived former Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Travis Shaw on Saturday as the Buccaneers trimmed their roster ahead of the 53-man deadline. For Longhorns fans who watched Shaw’s one season in burnt orange, the news lands with a familiar shrug.

Shaw arrived in Austin in the spring of 2025 as a former five-star prospect and highly ranked transfer from North Carolina. At 6-foot-5 and well over 330 pounds, he looked the part of an SEC space-eater.

Texas needed interior depth after years of rotating big bodies, and Shaw’s size plus a modestly improved 2024 at UNC (26 tackles, 4 tackles for loss) suggested he might finally deliver on the recruiting hype that once put him among the nation’s top prospects.

That never happened. In 13 games Shaw recorded 13 tackles, one tackle for loss, and zero sacks. He started once, against Georgia, and otherwise stayed a rotational piece.

The hoped-for late-career jump—the kind T’Vondre Sweat made in Austin—never materialized. Shaw finished his college career with 68 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and no sacks across 50 games. Production never matched the pedigree.

The NFL path followed the same script. Undrafted in April, he signed with New England, got waived before camp, and caught on with Tampa Bay in late July when the Bucs needed bodies while Vita Vea dealt with a back issue.

A month later, he was gone again, one of several early cuts as Todd Bowles’ staff finalized the 53. He could still land on a practice squad. That would not change what Longhorns supporters saw in 2025.

Texas has done well developing some transfers into difference-makers. Shaw was not one of them. He was a large, experienced body who filled snaps without moving the needle.

In a program that now regularly contends in the SEC, that is the definition of a disappointment. Fans who remember the five-star label and the portal excitement were left with a player who looked the part more than he played it.

Shaw’s Texas chapter is closed. The Buccaneers have moved on.

For Horns fans, it is simply another reminder that size and recruiting stars do not automatically translate once the lights come on in Austin.

Some transfers become legends. Others become footnotes. Shaw belongs in the second group.
