After taking the opener, Boston dropped the nightcap 9-2, and left-hander Raymond Burgos was optioned to Triple-A Worcester before Sunday’s series finale.
Burgos had been summoned from Worcester only a day earlier to give the club extra pitching depth for the twin bill. His opportunity arrived in the second game, and it did not go as planned.
The 27-year-old worked 2.1 innings and was charged with five earned runs on seven hits. Those numbers helped the Yankees pull away and left Boston searching for a different look in the bullpen heading into the final game of the set.
The move returns Burgos to a Worcester club where his 2026 season has been uneven. He entered the brief major-league stint with a 3-6 record, a 5.14 ERA, and 58 strikeouts across 17 appearances.
Those figures suggested a pitcher still searching for consistency at the highest minor-league level, even as the Red Sox have periodically needed arms.
After Saturday’s outing his major-league line this year sits at a 5.84 ERA in four games, a small sample that nonetheless prompted the organization to send him back down rather than keep him on the active roster.
Optioning a recently recalled pitcher after a single difficult appearance is a familiar midseason calculation. Teams constantly juggle innings, rest, and matchups, especially during a stretch that includes extra games.
Boston’s decision does not close the door on Burgos for the remainder of the year; it simply resets him in an environment where he can work on command and sequencing away from the immediate pressure of a pennant-race series against a division rival.
For Burgos the next step is straightforward if not easy. He must produce better results in Worcester and wait for another injury, workload spike, or roster crunch to create an opening in Boston.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, will look to stabilize the pitching staff for Sunday and beyond while they try to take the series.
One rough outing does not define a career, but it can determine how quickly a player gets another chance. Burgos now has to prove, again, that he belongs.
