The Cleveland Browns spent years circling the same question: who is actually going to be the quarterback of the future? A recent 2027 NFL mock draft offers a blunt answer.
In that projection, ESPN’s Jordan Reid does not think the Browns will wait to see if the board falls their way. Instead, Reid has them trading up with the Miami Dolphins for the No. 1 overall pick, which they would then use to select Oregon quarterback Dante Moore.
Reid frames the move as Cleveland taking fate into its own hands. The package he lays out is steep: both of the Browns’ first-rounders, projected at Nos. 4 and 32, plus a 2027 fourth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder, sent to the Dolphins for the top selection.
Reid’s logic is straightforward from a Cleveland perspective. Miami already has a young quarterback in Malik Willis after a recent investment. The Browns, unless Shedeur Sanders takes a massive Year 2 leap that Reid calls unlikely, still do not.
Deshaun Watson’s contract is also set to expire after this season, which Reid presents as the right window for Cleveland to take another swing at a franchise passer and pair him with the young talent already on the roster.
That last part is the Browns-centric case for paying up. Moore, in Reid’s view, is not just a name at the top of a loaded quarterback class. He has clean mechanics, and his accuracy stood out in his first year as Oregon’s starter.
Cleveland would be handing him a situation with young pieces already in place rather than asking him to carry a barren roster. If that college production travels, Reid writes, the Browns could turn things around quickly.
From Berea’s side of the ledger, the cost is real. Giving up two first-round picks in the same draft, plus future capital, is the kind of deal a franchise only makes when it believes the quarterback is the missing piece rather than one of several needs.
It also assumes Miami is willing to slide a few spots and still land a premium prospect, which Reid has the Dolphins doing with Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at No. 4.
Cleveland’s return is simpler: control of the board, and the chance to choose Moore instead of hoping Arch Manning or Notre Dame’s CJ Carr is still there three picks later.
None of this is locked in. Reid’s order is built on current Football Power Index projections, and an entire college season still has to be played. Moore still has to keep climbing. Sanders still has a season to change the conversation. But the mock captures something Browns fans already feel in their bones.
If Cleveland is going to keep building around young skill and line talent, it cannot keep treating the quarterback job as a year-to-year experiment.
Trading up for Moore is the aggressive version of that idea: spend the capital, take the passer, and try to grow the rest of the roster with him instead of around the vacancy.
