There was a stretch not too long ago when Minnesota Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson stood alone as the clearest choice for the top wide receiver spot in the NFL.
That view has shifted after the 2025 season. Plenty of observers now debate exactly where the Vikings star ranks among the league’s top pass-catchers. Jefferson remains confident those opinions will swing back his way.
“Not yet,” Jefferson recently said. “Not yet. But they will know after this year —I’ll tell you that.”
Part of his optimism stems from the quarterback now under center. Jefferson has grown impressed with Kyler Murray’s dual-threat skill set, both as a runner and a passer.
“What excites me is his ability to just be an athlete,” Jefferson said of Murray. “Everybody knows what he does when the ball is in his hands, running the ball and being able to create time back there in the pocket. When a play might be dead, he’s able to kind of move with his feet and make something happen. So, you’re always alive, and you’re always just expecting that the ball is going to come your way.
“But his throwing ability is also something that has really, really surprised me. While he was in Arizona, I didn’t really keep track and pay attention to his arm talent. And seeing the different type of throws he’s making, where he’s throwing the ball, it’s been really, really surprising me.”
That kind of public praise for a teammate feels freer this season. A year ago, Jefferson carefully avoided any remarks that might draw unwanted attention.
“That one comment that I might make about one of my teammates might make headlines and be the trending topic, and that might be a bad look on the team and for me as well,” Jefferson said. “So just keeping it in house, communicating with my teammates personally and letting them know what’s going on . . . even talking with J.J. McCarthy last season and making sure his head is on right, with all of the negativity. Never will I downplay anybody in the media, no matter how bad it is.”
Despite the challenges and the measured public stance, Jefferson still put up solid numbers. He finished 2025 with 1,048 receiving yards, marking his sixth consecutive season over the 1,000-yard mark.
The consistency speaks to the foundation he has built since entering the league. From his early breakout years through the more recent campaigns, Jefferson has delivered production that few receivers match year after year.
Now, with a quarterback whose mobility keeps plays alive and whose arm strength has caught Jefferson off guard in a positive way, the stage looks set for a potential rebound. Teammates and coaches have taken notice of the energy Jefferson brings to practices and meetings as the new season approaches.
Looking further back, the 2022 campaign stands as a high-water mark. That year Jefferson earned first-team All-Pro honors and captured the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award, putting him firmly at the top of the receiver conversation.
Whether he can recapture that level of dominance remains to be seen, but Jefferson has made his intentions clear. He expects the football world to recognize the results by the time the final whistle blows on the upcoming schedule.
Around the Vikings facility, the focus stays on preparation and chemistry between Jefferson and Murray. The wideout’s willingness to highlight his quarterback’s strengths publicly this time around suggests a different atmosphere than last season.
Supporters of the team point to Jefferson’s track record of responding to questions with production on the field. His history of stacking 1,000-yard seasons offers a baseline of reliability that few players achieve.
