The Green Bay Packers enter the final stretch of the preseason with a crowded secondary, and one veteran cornerback stands out as a potential candidate for a major roster move, according to reporting from ESPN.
Rob Demovsky of ESPN projected that if the Packers make any high-profile transaction ahead of the league-mandated roster cuts, it would most likely involve Keisean Nixon. The depth at the position has created a situation where the team might explore options involving the experienced defensive back.
“If there is going to be a high-profile move on cutdown day, it would be Nixon,” Demovsky wrote. “Perhaps the Packers will try to trade him or release him.”
Nixon’s path through this training camp has taken several unexpected turns. Discussions earlier centered on whether he might sit out to force a better contract situation. Those conversations later shifted toward whether coaches were sending a message through reduced opportunities or pushing him in a different direction.
Now attention turns to his chances of remaining on the 53-man roster when final decisions arrive.
When the Packers signed Nixon to a three-year extension, he brought value as both a return specialist and a nickel corner. Those special teams contributions have faded, and last season the coaching staff shifted him primarily to outside coverage. He performed nearly as effectively in that role.
With Javon Bullard locked into the slot duties, however, a return to the interior appears unlikely.
Talk circulated before camp that Nixon could hold out while playing under a deal that compensated him more like a rotational piece. His solid work on the boundary suggested he had earned consideration for starter-level pay. Instead of negotiating changes, the organization added competition through free-agent acquisition Benjamin St-Juste and rookie Brandon Cisse.
St-Juste was expected mainly to challenge Carrington Valentine for playing time. Cisse was projected to develop gradually behind the veterans. The young corner’s rapid progress has forced coaches to reevaluate how Nixon fits into the larger picture.
Demovsky’s roster projection also includes Kamal Hadden and Domani Jackson among those expected to stick. Should Nixon depart via trade, Jaylin Simpson would move up the depth chart as the next option, according to the same analysis.
For much of camp Nixon worked extensively with the first-team defense. In recent practices that pattern changed, and he found himself rotating with the second and third groups. He interpreted the adjustment as a form of discipline from the staff.
“I guess I’m being punished right now, I guess, I don’t know,” Nixon said. “I don’t really worry about what I’m running in camp, ones or twos. I just keep my process and just compete — for real.”
Head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the comments with a measured response that emphasized the competitive nature of the entire roster battle.
“He loves making a headline, doesn’t he?” LaFleur said. “Yeah, you guys will take it different than me, because the way I look at it is this: Then I guess our whole team is being punished, because everybody’s in competition.”
Since those remarks, Nixon has rarely rejoined the starting unit. His combination of NFL starting experience and a manageable salary could still attract interest from other clubs looking to add a proven corner. If the Packers decide an outright release is the cleaner path, they would likely accept whatever compensation comes their way rather than lose him for nothing.
The coming days will clarify whether Green Bay finds a trading partner or elects to move on completely. For a player who appears headed toward his final season with the franchise, the next two weeks carry significant weight.
