Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte Situation Takes New Turn

The Arizona Diamondbacks have clarified the status of second baseman Ketel Marte, moving him from the restricted list to the 10-day injured list after a series of unusual events this week.

General manager Mike Hazen confirmed the roster change following an in-person discussion with the player. Hazen indicated that Marte is expected to return to the active roster once he recovers fully from the issues identified in recent medical evaluations.

Marte had been placed on the restricted list earlier in the week after failing to report for the series opener against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. His agent described the situation as involving a personal matter that required attention away from the team.

The All-Star infielder traveled back to the Phoenix area to undergo an MRI examination on his knee and to sit down with team officials. The meeting took place Thursday at the club’s spring training complex in Scottsdale.

Reports from local media outlets indicated the discussion among Marte, his representative, Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo went smoothly. Medical imaging showed inflammation affecting both the upper hamstring and the medial joint of the knee.

Marte received an injection to address the inflammation later that same afternoon. Those familiar with the evaluation suggested the recovery timeline could allow him to rejoin the club toward the shorter end of a standard 10-day injured list stay.

Team president and CEO Derrick Hall had acknowledged earlier Thursday that the organization still lacked complete details about the precise reasons for Marte’s unexpected absence. The lack of immediate communication created uncertainty throughout the clubhouse during the series in Boston.

Lovullo addressed the situation publicly shortly after Marte’s no-show, speaking with clear emotion.

“Just care for him and love him. I love him and I care for him,” Lovullo said after Marte’s no-show. “He is fine — I want you guys to know that. I just care for him on that level. So does everybody in that room.”

This is not the first time Marte has stepped away without advance notice. During the 2025 season he left for the Dominican Republic after the All-Star break and missed a three-game series, though the manager noted at the time that he had received some prior indication of a possible absence.

The current episode differed in that Marte had traveled with the team to Boston and then simply did not appear at the ballpark. That sequence left teammates and coaches searching for answers in the middle of a road trip.

Hazen chose not to share specifics from Thursday’s conversation when speaking with reporters. The focus instead remained on the path forward and the expectation that Marte would be available once the injury clears.

Marte has produced a .760 OPS with 21 home runs so far this season, numbers that fall short of his peak form in recent years. Arizona remains in the thick of the National League playoff picture and will rely on his bat and defense as the schedule tightens in the coming weeks.

The decision to place him on the injured list rather than pursue more permanent measures signals the club’s preference to keep him in the fold. Officials appear ready to move past the recent disruption once health and communication issues are resolved.

Supporters around the organization have stressed the value Marte brings both on the field and as a longtime member of the roster. His return, whenever it comes, is expected to provide a boost during the stretch run.

For now the Diamondbacks will operate without their regular second baseman while monitoring his progress.

The next updates are likely to center on how quickly the inflammation responds to treatment and when he can resume baseball activities.
