The Philadelphia Phillies claimed right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, adding depth to their pitching staff ahead of a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Hoffmann, 26, was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the move. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Phillies recalled infielder/outfielder Felix Reyes from Lehigh Valley and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right wrist fracture.

The Phillies announced the transaction with this statement: “The Phillies have claimed RHP Andrew Hoffmann off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and optioned him to triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room on the 40-man roster, INF/OF Felix Reyes was recalled from LHV and placed on the 60-day injured list with a right wrist fracture.”

Arizona had designated Hoffmann for assignment earlier in the week, opening the door for other clubs to claim him.The right-hander will start his time with the organization at the minor league level while the big league club prepares for its next stretch of games.

Hoffmann was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the 367th overall pick, out of the University of Illinois. He grew up in Joliet, Illinois.

In July 2022, the Braves traded him along with outfielder Drew Waters and third baseman XJ Alexander to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a competitive balance draft pick.

He reached the majors with the Royals in 2025. In his initial big league stint that year, Hoffmann allowed six runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out five batters over 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Kansas City then sent him to Arizona on July 26, 2025, in a deal that brought outfielder Randal Grichuk to the Royals.

With the Diamondbacks last season, Hoffmann finished with a 7.36 ERA across 7 1/3 innings. This season he has posted a 7.71 ERA in 11 2/3 innings of work.

His repertoire centers on three pitches. He throws a mid-90s four-seam fastball about 52 percent of the time, pairs it with a high-80s changeup roughly 28 percent of the time, and mixes in a mid-to-high-80s slider on about 21 percent of his pitches.

The Phillies enter the series riding a strong wave of recent results. They have won six consecutive games after sweeping both the Minnesota Twins and the Miami Marlins. Overall they have taken eight of their last 10 contests.

Philadelphia sits in second place in the National League East with a 70-58 record, trailing the first-place Atlanta Braves by 4 1/2 games.

In the wild-card standings, the Phillies hold the second National League wild-card position. They trail the Chicago Cubs by four games for the top wild-card spot and lead the San Diego Padres by two games for the final berth.

The club is scheduled to open a three-game set against the Cardinals on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. EDT.

Hoffmann’s addition provides another arm in the organization as the Phillies push toward the postseason. The team has shown momentum in recent weeks and continues to look for ways to strengthen its roster for the final stretch of the regular season.

Reyes’ placement on the longer injured list creates an opportunity for other players in the system while the club monitors his recovery from the wrist injury.

The move comes as the Phillies balance their major league needs with the development of players at Triple-A. Hoffmann will have the chance to refine his command and effectiveness in Lehigh Valley before any potential call-up later in the year.

Fans following the club closely will watch how the new addition performs in the minors and whether he factors into the bullpen picture down the stretch. The Phillies remain focused on maintaining their position in a competitive National League playoff race.
